Wonderful - home away from home
We stayed at Days Inn Clayton while taking a whirlwind weekend tour from Oklahoma City to the Sangre De Christo Mountains/Red River/Taos area in New Mexico. We arrived very late Friday evening (after 1 AM) and were warmly greeted. The accomodations in our room were two queen beds, TV with cable/HBO, microwave, and mini fridge. The microwave and fridge were unexpected - very nice! For a family of four when away from home in a small town - next time we'll be sure to bring popcorn and sodas from home for movies before bed time. If you bring your own DVD's on the road, bring a portable DVD player because they had a VCR in our room. Another option for us is to bring a video game console from home when you don't care for what's on TV. When we come back, I'll probably bring a cooler with sandwich fixin's for lunches on the road - because the fridge will keep our food cool overnight, and then I can refill the cooler with hotel ice in the morning.
For those who have laptops with WiFi, there's an ethernet connection in the room, and wireless that covers the lobby and most of the hotel(?) - and Clayton seems to have a wireless connection across the street at their small public building (Chamber of Commerce/Tourism Bureau?). All are open connections.
I debated staying two nights (we reserved one night) because of our finances and drive time, but after our day long drive from the mountains and back, a second night was definately worthwhile (especially for the exhausted driver)! The kids got to wear themselves out in the pool while we relaxed.
Maybe it was the time of year (mid November), but the heated indoor pool was too cold (according to the kids), but the hot tub was very nice. The pool area is large enough for a few families to have fun around. After a night of restful sleep, I'm rejuvinated and ready to hit the road again. The kids are hitting the pool one last time this morning before we check out and head back home.
Be aware that there is a train that goes thru Clayton - it might wake you up during the night, but you'll find yourself quickly dozing back to sleep again.
For the route we were on, and our chosen destination, we will most likely stay here again. The wife says she wants to do this again without the kids on our anniversary, and I suspect we'll be staying at the Days Inn Clayton on our way back and forth from the mountains.
