Absolutely Wonderful
By ,
For some research I was doing in Portland, I stayed at The Percy Inn for 10 days; my room - the John Keats room - was just ideal for me, neither too large nor too small. It was great to have such a comfy, personal touch while away from home for so long! The continental breakfast is more than adequate, but the same each day. Part of what made the stay so enjoyable was the two people you are most likely to see on a regular basis, Megan and Carrie. The Inn is quite conveniently located, definitely within walking distance of wherever you might want to go in downtown Portland. Peter

Pricey for the Quality
By ,
I would have to agree with the poster who sent Dale an email complaint. We stayed there for my partner's birthday weekend, and although we liked the idea of the 2nd floor pantry, the juice was VERY spoiled and the "instant coffee" were actually PODs, which require a POD machine, not just instant water. Therefore, they would not diffuse. Our room had a distinct odor of a catbox, though we could not find a reason for it. The shower curtain SEVERLY mildewed, the linens were indeed shabby, as was just about every aspect of the room. I do not think that we would think about staying here again, and cannot recommend it.

Cozy, Charming Quiet and Convenient
By ,
This classic B&B was the perfect blend of beauty, service, charm and solitude. You would think that you were the only ones here, if not for the wonderful breakfast spread that awaits you in the morning. The rooms are charming, spacious, clean and private. The house itself is just off of the main street. It is a 5 minute walk to the Maine Museam of Art, 10 Minutes to Civic Center and another 5 minutes to Street & Company, the amazing seafood restaraunt on Wharf Street. Spend a few days here. You will not be dissapointed. Little hospitalities abound; from the board games provided, to the scented candles; from free soft drinks to hersey kisses by your bed; from a huge selection of dvd's to borrow for your viewing pleasure to an umbrella to keep you dry on a rainy night. It was, quite simply, a flawless display of hospitality. Other reviewer's have criticised the notes dictating the policies, but other than that, there is nothing that is not to be cherished about a stay hear. We will return, frequently.....

Surpise Extras. Great Location.
By ,
We were steered here from the tourist office and were favored with wonerdul rates - about 30 percent less than others and it included breakfast - sort of a continental plus style but plenty to choose from. All the rooms were different but handsome and we had about the smallest room but the largest bath with tub and shower with marble. Free soft drinks and snacks saved us from going out after a recent late arrival. They had WiFi we used also.

I'll be back
By ,
I just got back, from a mid-january stay at the Percy. It was a great experience. The place was immaculate and full of charm. I was in Portland on business and my local contact saw the Percy for the first time when he picked me up. He now plans to go to the Percy with his wife for a romantic get-away. The Percy had lots of features to make the stay convenient (as one example, a boiling water tap to make tea late at night). Breakfast was great and ample - cereal, toast, bagels, coffee, fruit muffins and more - more than I wanted. Baths were modern. Beds were comfortable. Towels were thick and fluffy. The location is great. I like to walk a town and I walked to the Museum, Starbucks, a hockey game, the Old Port, bookstores, antique stores and restraunts. Going away from town, I could have walked to the baseball stadium, in 25 minutes. As for minuses. It is an 1830 house and the ceilings are high. Taking my three bags up to the third floor, in one trip, was not a good idea. The stairs between the second and third floors are a bit steep. I took two trips to get my luggage down. Not surprisingly, a late night walk home in the Maine winter can be chilly. The Percy has parking, and if I were going to dinner in Old Port when the weather is cold, I'd drive there and back.

Awful!!!!! Please Read
By ,
Below is an email written to the innkeeper. I tried twice to get him to respond...he didn't.
----------------------------------
Hi Dale,

I was a guest at your inn on August 21. I have to say
that I was less than impressed with the quality of my
visit. Having stayed at over a dozen Bed and
Breakfast's in the New England area, I had certain
expectations regarding an inn in New England.

Below is a list of my remarks.

1. In Yankee Magazine, your inn is listed as having a
full breakfast. However, you only serve a
continental. You even have this listing on an easel
in your foyer.

2. The breakfast was horrible. It should NOT be even
served at such a highly regarded inn. I received a
better breakfast at a Quality Inn in South Carolina!!!

3. The coffee ran out on your guests that morning, and
it was Folgers!!! Dale, please consider upgrading to
Green Mountain or any variety of local brews. Folgers
is such a lousy coffee and should not be served at any
bed and breakfast.

4. The bagels were half frozen and those that weren't
were soggy from defrosting at room temperature (the
same goes for the bread). I was SHOCKED at this. I
cannot believe that you don't have a local bagel shop
deliver freshly baked goods each morning. This is
completely unacceptable!

5. The muffins were uncooked in the middle. Again,
more of the same.

6. I never saw anyone come upstairs and clear away
dishes for other guests. I was also not the only one
complaining about the breakfast. It was not that good
at all.

7. The room was very nice but you do mention Ralph
Lauren towels in the bathroom. I seem to remember a
reference to them being luxurious and/or plush.
Anyway, the ones I received were old, rough, and
somewhat tattered on the end. Please invest in some
new high quality softer towels for your guests. These
were symbolic of my 5 year old towels at home. Not
what I would expect from a $200 per night room.

8. We arrived one hour prior to check in time.
However, it says on your sign outside that you might
be able to accommodate early arrivals. While I'm not
complaining about the time of the check in, I am
referencing the attitude on which we were greeted.
You were fine to me on the phone, but when your
employee came downstairs, the first thing she said to
my wife was "oh, you're early" and the tone was that
of inconveniencing her. She should have welcomed us
and not thrown that we were early as the first
comment. Perhaps she didn't mean to do this but it
sure came across that way.

Thank you for listening to my feedback and although I
already paid in full, I do not consider my stay with
your inn to be worth the amount I paid.

Best regards,
