Haunted and to Avoide!
By steve s saroff, 4/21/09
The Taxi driver thought the place was an abandoned building because there were no lights and the windows looked liked they were soot covered! You ring an ancient buzzer, and some geezer comes out and stares at you. Then insisted that I pay in CASH when I checked in, rather than doing the normal and paying at check out, because his credit card machine wasn't working. Late at night, suddenly the bathroom lights and fan went on by themselves. Creeepppyy!! And as I was finally drifting off to sleep, I had a dream of two little twin girls saying, "come and and play with us, forever, forever, forever." In the morning the other guests all looked embalmed and the dreariness of the place was not diminished by daylight...

I can not wait to go back
By agata, 3/26/08
I had chance to stay at this beautiful Mansion in March of 2008 I had great time the service was out standing. With the new management hotel looks amazing. I liked the rooms and delicious breakfast and personalized service. Most important the Mansion is just two blocs away from McCormick Conference Center.

This place went down hill in 1 year!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/30/07
I used the Wheeler Mansion in 2004 and 2005 for 2 different groups. Thos eyears the hotel was managed by Michael and Gary and it was awsome. I met the owner and she was a bit pretentious but overall the experience was good. I just used the hotel again in Oct 2007 and it was HORRIBLE! Bas Service, bad food, cold rooms! there was nothing good about this place. I couldnt believe it was the same place that I used in 04-05. Some thug named Chris was the manager. He would be better suited as a bouncer than a hotel manager. Chris was rude and indifferent to me and the 3 guest I put there and refused to help with anything. The heat was off in the hotel (the room was 63 degrees) and the breakfast was industrial and cold. Under the current management this hotel will die a quick death. I wouldnt send my worst enemy to that place.

A Bates Motel Clone
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/06
The ac mechanical systems failed prior to our checking in. The staff failed to inform us as they offhandedly commented that the property was sure to cool off. Our room, not exactly what we expected at a rack rate of more than $300, exceed a termpature of 90 degrees. As noted in other reviews the management is absent and when present consistantly achieves an level of arrogance which at best could be considered patronizing, unhelpful, and well, why dance around it, hostile. We left the same day we checked in after the candy in the room melted (I swear this actually happened). I have never written a review, positive or negative but feel compelled to warn others who like me search out new and interesting places to stay while traveling.

Not much to write home about...
By MichaelC, 2/18/06
This home was large, well-restored, and beautifully furnished. I would be jealous of any of my friends if they lived in such a home. But it was not by any measure a hotel. It was a $300/night key to a room in a practically abandoned home with little or no service and limited breakfast options available each the morning. If you want a comfortable bed in a comfortable room, this is for you (but watch out for the compromised security). If you want a hotel, look elsewhere.

nice bed- horrible owner
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/7/06
The owner is pretentious but the place is acceptable although not near anything. I will decide if the food is five star. I do not need to be told by the owner- the stay was marred by her treatment of the staff.

CANT WAIT TO RETURN
By Kianimahalo, 11/9/05
The Wheeler Mansion was Beautiful!! The service was outstanding! We were greeted at the door by a tall gentleman that made sure our every need was catered to during our 3 night stay, from transportation to dinner reservations! The breakfast was delicious every day! We will be back and will send our friends!!

Wheeler Mansion
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/19/05
The rooms were nice but the management was absent..there isn't even a button on your -room phone to get to the front desk. I when checking out I was asked if I used the computer...gee I wish I knew they had one. Breakfast-such as it was-was never on time. I thought it would be like an upscale B&B but I was dissapointed. Since I was attending a convention the convenience to the McCormick place was a plus...too bad i had to walk down the street to the Hyatt for some decent food. The place has a lot of potential that is not be reliazed.

All Fluff with no substance
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/22/05
Service is horrible - I stayed here a year ago, and the married couple that managed the place was simply amazing. One year later, the couple is gone and the service has suffered immensely. Breakfast is awful, housekeeping is questionable, and no one running the desk has any idea about anything in the city. Just ridiculous. Find a hotel where the staff cares about you as a guest rather than how much money you are spending - because it is not the Wheeler Mansion. The rooms are beautiful and decently appointed. Unless you are having a convention at McCormick Place, it is not convenient to the downtown area at all.

Wheeler Mansion
By Mary, 7/31/04
The rooms are big and grand - very nice. The breakfast was poor - skip it and find another place. The lack of a railing on the steep outside stairs to the mansion was a problem. Overall, the place smacked of absentee management - adequate but lacked that extra touch that would send me back.
