10 reviews for Vitosha Guest Haus, Ann Arbor
lovely and terrible, all at one
By Nancy, 08/04/08
Lovely ‘old country’ accommodations close to campus, great breakfast, but proprietor has unbelievably bad interpersonal skills to the point to making you feel completely unwelcomed and uncomfortable. If you have any needs that interfere with her and her son’s schedules, watch out. You don’t want to be around when she’s yelling at the staff. Whatever you do, don't park in the front driveway, even though it's the most natural place to park when first arriving especially for those unfamiliar with the streets around there. I did and was scolded rather than welcomed after a long weary ride – my first encounter with her. But if you are thick-skinned, it's relatively close to campus, pleasantly quaint offerings, and good food, although from reading other reviews, the rooms and food apparently vary in quality.

Beautiful place, rude service.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/09/08
"Vitosha Guest Haus Inn offers lodging to scholars, artists and the “world weary” business traveler..." Although this might sound appealing, if you do not fit or even appear to fit into their target market you are made very aware of it.

Will always stay here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/27/08
The rooms and service were amazing, every detail was attended to. The furnishing were authentic and understated - no artsy craftsy cuteness, from the thickly quilted bed coverings, working antique phones and heated slate floor, we felt that we had stepped back in time to a Bavarian or German Guest house. Our bed was firm, which was great for us, and some fellow guests and we peaked in each others rooms. Their beds were incredibly soft, so you should be able to get what you need. We sleep at home around 62, and Vitosha was quite a bit warmer. We actually cracked our window in the middle of the night. The innkeeper was very polite, and seemed genuinely concerned about our comfort, offering to serve us any way she could. Her staff was wonderful as well. The food could not have been better. We've stayed at a number of B&Bs. All of Vitosha's food was made by hand - not pre-packaged foodstuffs. Breakfast was superb. Fine linen and china, fresh flowers on the table. The coffee reminded me of Starbucks - rich and full bodied. We drank 2 pots each morning. I would recommend this establishment to anyone who wants peace and to relax. It was a far cry from a Comfort Inn Jacuzzi Suite with polyester comforters, starving artist decorations and a coffee pot in the bathroom. This was by far the most peaceful getaway we have enjoyed.

not so welcoming
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/03/07
my husband and i were treated like second-class citizens. our room was freezing. the breakfast was cold and i totally agree with the other reviewer about the awful coffee. i also got the impression that the owner treats her employees rather badly as they seemed to kind of fear her. there are better establishments other than this in ann arbor.

St. Thomas Lutheran Church - Women's Retreat
By Denise, 11/17/06
The rooms were wonderful except some were too hot and some were too cold. A couple of the bed were very hard. One room had a toilet that would not flush. That was difficult since there were four people in the room. We had planned this event over two months ago with times that meals were to be served and we also paid for an afternoon tea. The dinner was basically cold. Cold chicken, cold salads. The cooks didn't speak English very well and we were served coffee that could stand on its own two feet. We asked for weaker coffee and tea and were given the same thing again. Instant coffee would have been better as well as a tea bag. Desserts were good. Lunch the next day had the same salad and rice dish with subs. There wasn't enough food for everyone either. The tea was served 45 minutes late and 10 people had to go and we were not offered any type of reimbursement for the establishment's late service of the tea which was an additional $10 per person. Also a number of people requested their charge card bills and were told to wait numerous times. One woman who was a diabetic requested diabetic syrup at the time of the sign-up for the retreat as well as twice on the day she arrived. On Saturday, she was told that the owner didn't have time to get it as we stayed up till 10:30 pm. Whenever we asked for something we were treated like second class citizens and didn't feel the owner had our best interests in mind. I loved the dogs and cats. George couldn't have been friendlier. The meeting room was very cold and we had to ask numerous times to turn up the heat. I would not use this establishment again.

Don't stay here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/20/06
After making reservation months in advance, arrive to find I am not expected. Given a nice room anyway but in the middle of the night a note is slipped under the door saying that due to the owner's 'not recalling' having taken a credit card number in confirmation, I would have to leave by noon. I was offered a room without a bath or shower or toilet for the next two nights and told I could shower at a local health club. Meanwhile, every other hotel room in Ann Arbor has been booked for weeks. This experience has completely ruined an important and tightly scheduled business trip. An appalling experience.

Beautiful place, Great Service
By Chris, 10/17/06
I recently stayed at this beautiful Bed and Breakfast, and it was amazing. I read some of the other reviews giving it only 1 star, so I felt I should say something good. I didn't deal with the owner, but the man who showed us to our room was very friendly and made every attempt to make us feel comfortable. Our room was beautiful; antique furniture, a bay window overlooking the courtyard, a fireplace. Definately worth the price. However, next time i stay I'll have to be wary of the other's reviews I guess.

Never Again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/13/06
The premises were very clean and tastefully furnished but the owner made us feel like we were hassling her and was generally difficult to interact with. When my husband and I requested a room with a bathtub she told us that under no circumstances were we to use the bathtub "as a playground." We found this highly offensive as we are both respectable adults. Also our room was cold and when we told her this in the morning, she became combattive. The people we ate breakfast with also told us their room was cold. This is a beautiful place but I did not feel welcome at all. Watch out for the owner.

The Third Degree
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/14/05
I have never felt so uncomfortable and loathed at a B & B before: My father and I woke up early and came down for breakfast. The staff, (the only friendly individuals on site), welcomed us in to the dinning area and brought us coffee. While enjoying our toast the owner came in, and questioned, "Who are you?" We told her and she still looked irritated, claiming she hadn't met us. (I had met her the day before when she showed me my room). She behaved as though she had discovered two squatters lounging in her house....oh, I mean haus. Upon returning to our room, she questioned us yet again, "What room are you in?" Apparently, she thought we were one of the many infamous rascals who crash Bed & Breakfast's hoping to scam a free fruit salad. Perhaps she had unrealistic expectations when opening an inn for the "world weary." That world embodies other individuals and if you are a misanthrope, perhaps you should choose another livelihood.
