Very dissapointed with the level of service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/25/08
We decided to go to Occidental Grant through Air Canada Vacations this year. Our flight from Vancover to Punta Cana was great. We thought we were in for a great week. We landed in Punta Cana after 10 hours of flying through Toronto and the immigration/airport services was great. Air Canada had arranged a bus for us to get to the hotel. After we arrived at the hotel it was almost an hour before we could check in. Not one person at the front desk was in a hurry to check in the 12 families who came in at 9.45pm. After complaining and asking to have another desk cleark to open we finally got checked in and went to our room. Room we got was in the building 12 (ground floor) at best it was like a motel room in Canada. After one shower there was water coming in to the bedroom. (only good thing was the bed) towels had all kinds of stains and felt dirty and unclean. Next day after speaking with Air Canada Representative, we decided to pay another $630.00 and go to their so call "Royal Club" area. Well now we went from a motel room to a little bit better room but everything else was the same. Cheap wine/ Recycled food/ Power outage and no generator etc etc etc. Anyway great lesson learned. Never again at Occidental Grand in Punta Cana.

Find another Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/19/08
First I will start and say the place is beautiful, night time entertainment was excellent and the weather was perfect. After that, it is hard to find anything nice about the experience. The food was awful and the service was worse. People were not helpful and basically lied to your face. Constant pressure to buy time share or packages, we would ask for a cup a coffee and then we would have to ask again to get one 15 - 20 minutes later. Tables were never set up for 4 people. The food was over cooked. They would not let us make reservations for all the restaurants. No towels. Not hot water.Had to wait for an hour to meet with a manger and then they made you come back another day and wait again for an hour.Safe costs $25. Horse back riding is not free. A short walk and then they try to sell you a trip on the beach. I can go on and on. Cancun was a much better experience for the family. ( Paradise hotel ) Do yourself a favor and do not go to this holtel.

What an experience, wouldn't go back.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/29/08
LISTEN...it's not like they say it is. They put a shame to any Occidental Resort that's out there. Its management. Arrived tired and hungary to find out they lost my paperwork. The desk service is terrible. They completely ignore you. Finally got my room only to find 1 king size bed for 3 people. The resort needs updating. They overbook so when people come in for their rooms they have to wait till the next day for the people to leave in the room you probably reserved. So they will stick you in another for the mean time. Don't eat the beef or pork, extremely tough. The help is very good. But the mgmt staff needs help. Go somewhere else.

One of the Worst Hotels in the Caribbean!!!!
By Sweetguy4eva23, 7/28/08
The hotel overall was nice. The service desk was awful!!!!! Lack of professionalism at its finest. No one wants to help you when you need some help. People harrasing the tourists in order to get a timeshare. The buffet was adequate. The restaurants were much better but not enough food on the plate. The water pressure in the room was awful. One day I didnt have any water at all!!! I will not go back there at all no matter if they paid me or not! The best highlight is going to the Mangu disco which is right next door to the hotel. Beach is awesome but a lot of vendors which do not let people relax!

THE WORST HOTEL EVER!
By Luna, 7/20/08
Out of the fact that he facilities are not bad, the rest is a total dissappoinment. The staff is harassing you constantly for you to buy a package for your next time. The show people are annoying, there is a total lack of knowledge of what peace and tranquily mean. I couldn't relax in the beach for a minute, they were on me, waking me up, talking to me, bothering me 24/7. The food is horrible. Europeans seemed to enjoy it though. I personally, did not pay to go to the caribbean to eat turkey and mashed potatoes. Lobster is not included, you have to pay 35 dollars for one lobster. Shrimps I did not even see in pictures while I was there. Fried fish and seafood in general non-existant. Everything else ridiculously overpriced.

It was SO SO
By Clive, 7/9/08
The beach in Punta Cana is gorgeous, no doubt about it, although the speed boats made a lot of noise and polluting the air. Food at the hotel was quite disappointing. Everyday was the same food at the Beach Club. We stayed at the Royal Club with dedicated concierge service who spoke limited English. Food at the theme restaurants was overcooked and the soup tasted like sea water, with the exception of the Oriental. The best part would be the the excursion. I stayed at the Occidental in Riviera Maya, Mexico last year, no comparison. Staff in Mexico are much more friendlier and can speak much better English.

do not read any of the negative reviews
By Jennifer, 6/25/08
I would like to first start off saying that before I went I read 100s of reviews, some were good and others were terrible. DO NOT listen to any of the negative reviews, it seems like they were staying at a completely different resort. The service was excellent, from the front desk, to the restaurants, to the maids, to the bartenders and the entertainers. Everyone there was very welcoming and more extremely nice and helpful. Some reviews complain about the shower with regard to the hot water and water pressure and let me tell you I, nor the 3 other people I went with (and we had 2 rooms) had any complaints about that. I've had worse pressure and hot water when I visit my boyfriend's family in Pennsylvania, right here in the US. The food was fantastic, there was always more than enough to choose from and it all tasted great, at the buffet as well as the other reservation restaurants. The rooms were very clean, there were no bugs in the room, the maids cleaned up everyday, leaving new towels, more drinks in the fridge and little flowers in the bathroom or on top of the desk/tv stand. Some other complaints were also about the power being out for long periods of time. I was there from a Wednesday-Sunday and we didn't lose power once. The beach was gorgeous as were the pools and the drinks made at the swim up bar were great. If you want a great tasting drink that'll get u drunk quick, get the bartender Albert to make you a Blue Hawain, they are amazing. There was also live entertainment every night, which was very good, some people had said it was amateur, but they try very hard and practice/prepare all afternoon for the show every night. Lastly, the club that is literally a 2 minute walk from the lobby is the BEST in all of punta cana. The music is great and they stay open extremely late. And then a good idea is to grab some pizza from the pizzeria on the way back to your room after the club bc the pizzaria is open until 6AM. IT WAS THE BEST VACATION EVER. For the deal you will get at this resort don't even think twice!

Loved it!
By Janene Marshall, 4/29/08
I read the negative reviews, I'm not exactly sure what those people were expecting, but our experience was wonderful. Our room was clean, the staff were very nice and courteous, the food was wonderful, and the shows were cute. The one draw back was that our room was directly across from the room where the maids would come in the morning to get their supplies so it was a little noisy. Other than that, I would absolutely stay there again. It was worth the money, and we were very satisfied.
