On arrival at the Occidental Grand - Punta Cana, immediately moved to another hotel due to being over booked. Two nights at the hotel next door resulted in being checked in once again and the knightmare begins. Family of six with two adjoining rooms should'nt be too hard to work out and due to the mix up of over booking we had special treatment of the rooms being ready early. After getting the keys around 2pm we got taken to our rooms, the first was ready so we had a look around and unpacked the cases as you do. The second room was not ready at all, so back to reception, and keys given by mistake they send back house keeping, after one hour back to reception they had not come. This continued for a further 10 visits and in the end resulted in taking pictures on my phone to prove the beds and room were not ready. I take my hat off to them though as they finally did it for 7pm!!!! So we had a bed, a balcony overlooking the resort accessable by 1 door the other was broken and wedged slightly open, the air-con didnt work but managed to annoy the fan on the ceiling! After the first nite you remember to turn it off as it rattles and swings around a lot not helping the sleeping process. Last but not least the bathroom. Nice to look at from the doorway but enter into the damp smell of mould, cracked tiles and black stuff on the once white silicon, complemented by rust in the bath. Hot water became a luxury when it was available ( not very often ) and be sure to hang the towels out to dry as the sun does it quicker than the staff.
It is unfair to say all the staff were unhelpful as we found atleast 4 that were, the rest funnily enough forget how to speak english when you have a problem or unless you want to buy a timeshare!!!
The food, well variety is definately one word, i choose to simplify it to BAD!!!! the buffet after one visit is more than enough and if you keep going back will end up only eating bread and finally leave your trip with food poisoning as we did. The snack bar food was amazing if drunk and needs to be avoided at all costs! To have a nice sit down meal at a restaurant needed booking, as we found out to be approx 2 days in advance, once you arrive at the busy restaurant you are presented by a small menu selection of very bad tasting food accompanied by wine that needs to be re-labelled from house red or white to nuclear waste and disposed of carefully. Due to the popularity of the restaurants and the booking time required, someone please tell me why they are always 10 - 15 empty tables at all times???
I have read many reviews and will be writing many more as this hotel is very over rated and nowhere near a 4 star rating that it has. Any good PR must have come from people who work within the company as everyone we met had the same concerns. Many had checked in for a day or less and moved hotels immediately. Bad accommodation, Bad service, Bad food, the pool was good ( had found one thing ok!! )
The good bits, any excursion from the beach was amazing, snorkelling, para-sailing, horse riding etc. White sand and clear waters, walks and breath taking sunsets completely made our holiday as we have many photos to prove.
Have you spotted the way to enjoy your stay at the Occidental?? spend as much time away from it as possible!!!!!!
