Worst Vacation Ever
By JENNIFER PEPE, 6/17/10
We were unable to eat at the restraunts because only two a night were open. When we did get in the food was horrible and staff was rude. In our room the tub had mold and chipping paint. We hazd 4 leaks in our room they never even came to clean up the water. We had to do it ourselves. They charge you $25 per week to use the safe and you dont have a choice. They also charge you for using a clling card. The food was horrible and they cross contaminate the food. They were cooking hamburgers that where brown right along side the fish. The Home Run Grill along with the buffet, pizza and taco standings where closed during the day. Even on the resort had to eat at the buffet at the beach. It took 30 minutes to find a table to eat. The food was cold and had no flavor. There were flies all over the fruit. The staff didnt even care when you brought this to their attention. The entire week they tried to sell us time shares and told us that we owed it to them. The entertainment was a joke. We were unable to play achery and ping pong. The water activities where not even running. We had to ask 3 times to go kayaking and the guy threw the life jacket at me. While you are in the water swimming they try to get you to pay for the banana boot. It was a very high price for 15 minutes they even went as far to jump in the water and swim up to you. They only had two bars open at night. I could sit here a give you every detail. So I will sum it up for you. IT WAS THE WORST VACATION EVER!!! I wrote a 3 page complaint to the Occidental Resort and I am waiting for a response if I get one.

HORRIBLE...would never go back...NEVER AGAIN!!!
By Nita, 4/28/10
First of all I travel a lot and stayed at many different hotels and many different countries. This was the WORST. My mistake was not doing any research on this hotel. I have never wrote a review until now. The rooms were TERRIBLE..old, musty, dark, mold in bathroom, and very, very out dated. The grounds were keep pretty nice, but chipped paint, broken fixutres, and overall very dated. Pool ...ok. The service was pretty bad. Twice I return to my room between 3 and 5 p.m. and the room was not cleaned. They NEVER swept the floor; they never replinished the refg; they never changed the sheets (even though I ask them to); the towels were old and diggy. If I did not have flip flops to wear in the shower, I would have been totally grossed out. Restuarant service was terrible in the Mexican restuarant. Once we got to know the staff, we were treated better in the Italian and Steak house. I have stayed at All-Inclusive hotel, and never had food this bad. Bland and just NOT GOOD....very sub-standard. The pizza place and taco stand were very good, because they made it fresh, right in front of you, all else was less then desirable. We had access the Club Level, so the bar at the beach was FABULOUS. Premium alcohol and very nice cabanas. The staff there were very, very nice. The beach was beautiful, but considering there are so many Carribean resort and beaches, why pay for this hotel. 2 star is the true rating. The peolpe we met were the best...Canadian people love this hotel...I think if they travel a bit further, they would be so dissapoined. For me NEVER AGAIN!

return many times
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/2/10
I have been to the occidental 4 times in the last year and plan on going back in July. I have never had any serious problems. A couple of times there was no hot water, but really do you really need it when it is so flippin hot, I would rather a cold shower. Yes it could use a little maintanence but for the amount of people that go through there no wonder. The food is like any place you go, you can;'t please everyone, and it is typical no matter what tropical island you visit to get visitors diariahh. I would recommend this place and maybe peoples expectations are a little high and perhaps harsh. Like I said I have been there four times now and enjoyed each and every visit.

4 star ????? how bout a reasonable 2!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/24/10
On arrival at the Occidental Grand - Punta Cana, immediately moved to another hotel due to being over booked. Two nights at the hotel next door resulted in being checked in once again and the knightmare begins. Family of six with two adjoining rooms should'nt be too hard to work out and due to the mix up of over booking we had special treatment of the rooms being ready early. After getting the keys around 2pm we got taken to our rooms, the first was ready so we had a look around and unpacked the cases as you do. The second room was not ready at all, so back to reception, and keys given by mistake they send back house keeping, after one hour back to reception they had not come. This continued for a further 10 visits and in the end resulted in taking pictures on my phone to prove the beds and room were not ready. I take my hat off to them though as they finally did it for 7pm!!!! So we had a bed, a balcony overlooking the resort accessable by 1 door the other was broken and wedged slightly open, the air-con didnt work but managed to annoy the fan on the ceiling! After the first nite you remember to turn it off as it rattles and swings around a lot not helping the sleeping process. Last but not least the bathroom. Nice to look at from the doorway but enter into the damp smell of mould, cracked tiles and black stuff on the once white silicon, complemented by rust in the bath. Hot water became a luxury when it was available ( not very often ) and be sure to hang the towels out to dry as the sun does it quicker than the staff. It is unfair to say all the staff were unhelpful as we found atleast 4 that were, the rest funnily enough forget how to speak english when you have a problem or unless you want to buy a timeshare!!! The food, well variety is definately one word, i choose to simplify it to BAD!!!! the buffet after one visit is more than enough and if you keep going back will end up only eating bread and finally leave your trip with food poisoning as we did. The snack bar food was amazing if drunk and needs to be avoided at all costs! To have a nice sit down meal at a restaurant needed booking, as we found out to be approx 2 days in advance, once you arrive at the busy restaurant you are presented by a small menu selection of very bad tasting food accompanied by wine that needs to be re-labelled from house red or white to nuclear waste and disposed of carefully. Due to the popularity of the restaurants and the booking time required, someone please tell me why they are always 10 - 15 empty tables at all times??? I have read many reviews and will be writing many more as this hotel is very over rated and nowhere near a 4 star rating that it has. Any good PR must have come from people who work within the company as everyone we met had the same concerns. Many had checked in for a day or less and moved hotels immediately. Bad accommodation, Bad service, Bad food, the pool was good ( had found one thing ok!! ) The good bits, any excursion from the beach was amazing, snorkelling, para-sailing, horse riding etc. White sand and clear waters, walks and breath taking sunsets completely made our holiday as we have many photos to prove. Have you spotted the way to enjoy your stay at the Occidental?? spend as much time away from it as possible!!!!!!

Worst Vacation Ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/4/10
We arrived on Friday Feb 26th. We had dinner that night and by mid day Saturday I was ill. By Saturday evening I was hospitalized with severe food poisoning. The hospital was full of tourists with the same issues. Uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea. I was finally released on Monday night with a $3,000 USD bill, but we weren't scheduled to fly out until Wednesday. I ate packaged crackers and bottled water for the day and half, while laying in bed still in pain. Waiting to board the plain yesterday there were four other people next to me that spent their vacation in the hospital also. I'm back in the USA now, and going to the doctor to get checked out. I still don't feel right. I would not recommend DR to anyone.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/3/10
We were there in Building 24 Room 204 from February 20 to February 27 2010. No hot water for the week, bathroom flooded everyday [engineering problem] we were told. We had to chase down the room staff to get more towels and faceclothes even though we left a substantial tip each day. We needed a bottle opener there none there, they argued there was, three days later they agreed there was not and installed one. The food and service atrocious. Our problem.....we have been Barcelo Resorts in the Mayan spoiled [for the same price we paid here] no entertainment, the 10PM shows were a bore, couldn't get a decent cup of tea, we walked out of the Italian Restaurant when the waiter escorted us and another couple up to a table with two chairs then left the four of us there, we were going to "flip a coin" but all four of us decided to leave. The assigne consciere to the building gave you the impression he was there to help you with any problems BULL!!! he was there to try and sell you a time share. Constantly harassed by scammers on the site, not just the beach but on site on the premises. Best night was the Wednesday night when a group of students set up a lap top to watch the Canada vs Russia game, about one hundred people gathered around it was great. To those who have posted positive comments, you were either very lucky or your standards are low. Bacelo Resorts in the Mayan all the way....we should have stuck with them but we decided to try Punta Cana and the Occidental Grand. BIG MISTAKE!!! Air Transat was great worth the extra $ for Club Class

Nightmare
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/19/10
I just got back from Punta Cana (occidental Grand) and this was the worst nightmare of my life. We arrived on Friday for a bachelorette weekend for my best friend and the rooms were dirty and smelled like mold and must. The sheets were stained and smelled like vomit! The staff was extremely rude and spoke no English. But the worst of it was that we all got so sick from the food!! We only drank bottled water, but it didn't matter, we arrived Friday and by Saturday the first of us (out of 8) had uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea. Then by time we were to leave, 6 out of 8 were incredibly ill and couldn't go far from the bathroom. A man who worked on the beach told us on Sunday (after everyone was already sick) that everyone who comes to the Occidental leaves ill, that the food and water and everything is contaminated with sewage water, that they mix it in for cooking and things. What a disaster, this resort should be shut down by an international health organization!!!! Unsanitary, unsafe for one's health. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! Im home in the US and cannot leave my bathroom!!!! Great ending to a horrific experience, wouldn't you agree!!

By Amy, 1/13/10
we just got back from punta cana (occidental grand) some things you should know start with the good. great grounds, the best beach, pool is great, no hot tubs ,mangu disco real fun drinks very expensive $16 mixed drinks.now the bad ,you cant drink the water theres signs everywhere that say not to, yet they use it to clean your glasses everyone i was there with (9 people) got sick from the food it is unedible.we lost power and water every other day at the same time not good when your sick.i then found out that the resort purposely turns off electric and water to save on money.i didnt think the help was rude as much as nobody realy cared when you complained. once again the food was so bad me and my wife so sick.the vendors are annoying they pester you one after another. our room smelled like sewage. the first night we had cockroach that was half the size of my hand in our room. I cant stress enough how bad the food was there is nothing to eat there. this was the worst resort ever do your self a favor stay somewhere else. AND FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE ON THIS REVIEW WHO LIKED IT YOUR JUST DISGUSTING LOW CLASS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!
