Never again!
We stayed at the Alexander Inn for two nights in April. We had an awful experience and would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
For starters, our hotel room was incredibly dirty. There was a high film of dust covering everything from tables, shelves to counters. The sheets were off white and dingy and, on top of that, had holes in them. The sheets wouldn't stay on the bed while sleeping and we woke up several times partially sleeping on an uncovered mattress, which reeked of urine. I even got a rash on my arm afterwards.
Also, at one point, our toilet clogged. We called the front desk and were told we could come down and get a plunger and fix the toilet ourselves.
As for the "nonsmoking" part, on our first night there was smoke wafting in from one of the rooms on our hall. We had to place a towel under the door.
While staying at the hotel, we ordered take-out and when the company didn't bring plates, we thought we could ask the front desk for plates or something we could use to eat our food on (It was indian food so it would be impossible to eat it without a service of some kind). They claimed they could give us napkins. Even though, there were plates and bowls for the continental breakfast. Now, suddenly, there were none. So, we called the delivery place and asked if they could bring the plates. They said okay and so we waited. However, after waiting a while we decided to go out in search of a place to buy our own plates. We found a convenience store a block away, purchased plates and brought them back to the hotel. We passed the person at the front desk on the way up; he looked at us and said nothing. Then after another hour, I called the delivery place to let them know that no one came to deliver the plates. They informed us that someone did come and they left the plates with the front desk. Lo and behold, the person at the front desk never informed us that someone brought us plates. He stole our plates instead.
We noticed the hotel was supposed to offer a "breakfast buffet" and 24 hour snack bar. I wouldn't consider a small limited continental breakfast a "breakfast buffet," nor would I consider old dried out bagels and pastries from the continental breakfast that morning a good idea of a "snack bar."
Also, there was construction going on outside all night, which didn't lend to getting much sleep.
That was our experience at the oh so quaint Alexander Inn. Don't stay there if you want to have anything close to a good time.
