Disappointing
By ,
Overall, this hotel is overpriced for the quality of the experience - both in terms of service and amenities. The room was a bit shabby (pillow cases worn, towels thin & old, rug spotted, bed sagging) and the service was in a word, unprofessional. It actually felt as though we were imposing on them! Very odd for any B&B, let alone one with relatively expensive prices. There are a lot of up and coming hotels in Portland - I would recommend investigating one of those before settling on the Danforth.

Renovated, but not all the way there yet
By ,
The Danforth has changed owners (the new owners also own the Pomegranate) and been renovated, reopening in mid-May 2009. When we were there not all parts of the renovation seemed to be in place, at least in our room -- among other things, we had a fuzzy old TV with a non-functional remote, there were no screens in the windows, and the room lighting wasn't very good. It's a beautiful old building though, our room was spacious, the common areas were clean and spacious, the staff were cheerful and tried to be helpful, and breakfast was exemplary, in a lovely room. Over all, it was pleasant but not memorable. Some of the earlier objections in this thread have been addressed, but I can't say for sure that all of them will be. Don't forget to go up in the cupola.

New Owners----A Wonderful Inn!!
By ,
The Danforth is a gorgeous, newly renovated Inn with lovely rooms and common areas, a warm and professional staff, and a location covenient to the harhor and Old Port district. The Danforth provides complimentary Wi-Fi, off-street parking, delightful breakfasts, bathrobes, and high quality bath products. We stayed in a two room suite. Both rooms and the full bath were nicely appointed (including luxury linens) and immaculate. During a tour of the Inn we viewed a number of rooms----all were beautifully, and uniquely, decorated with many thoughtful touches. Leslie, the Innkeeper, and her staff went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was perfect. We were encouraged to avail ourselves of the sitting and common rooms (don't miss the cupola and its stunning views of Portland) and enjoy The Danforth as our home during our stay. Leslie is a delightful and knoweldgeable hostess. She enthusiastically answered our questions regarding the Inn's history, architecture, and the silver and artwork dislayed throughout the inn. Leslie knows Portland well, so she was also an excellents resource for directions, restaurants, and points of interest. The Danforth is a hidden gem. The Inn is gorgeous, the accommodations are first-rate, the amenties are numerous, the location is ideal, and Leslie is a delight. You will enjoy your stay at The Danforth!

A Little Tired
By ,
The Danforth needs some TLC. The rates are extremely high, it is need of painting. The rooms are dated. Our service, well it was pretty spotty. In a word pretentious.

We loved it!
By ,
The Danforth is a unique place. It manages to be elegant and relaxed all at once. The decor is impeccable. Our room was lovely, and I took the liberty of peeking into several other unoccupied rooms - all equally beautiful! The location of the Danforth is great if you want to explore downtown Portland. The woman at the desk was extremely helpful with answering any questions we had. We were originally there in the winter but are looking forward to our next trip up to Portland in the warmer weather! It's a romantic spot, cozy and beautiful, and the breakfast was delicious and relaxing. You won't be disappointed.

A little odd
By ,
I can't complain too much about my stay at the Danforth - it was comfortable and quiet. The house is beautiful, even if its decor is a teeny bit dated. There was nothing horrible, just a couple odd things that occurred. Firstly, our bathroom sink was clogged. When I mentioned it to the staff, it was fixed immediately, however. Also, when my husband was taking a nap there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find housekeeping. They asked if they could come in to put clean sheets in the armoire. I told them my husband was asleep and asked if they could come back later. They insisted on coming in to put the sheets away, which was strange because we didn't need new sheets on the bed. I didn't really understand why they couldn't have avoided disturbing us and come back at a different time. Finally, after our return, our travel agent forwarded us an e-mail from the staff basically accusing us of taking the "spa" bathrobes from our room and telling us we would be charged for them. The thing is, there were never any robes in our room! It would have been nice to have them, as the weather was chilly and rainy during our weekend in Portland and it was cold getting out of the shower. It was a little presumptuous to assume that we "stole" the robes. All in all, not a terrible place, but the staff could be a bit more professional.

Disappointing
By ,
The Danforth is overrated and overpriced. The first room we were given was very worn, with stained furniture, a cramped and outdated bathroom, and a truly uncomfortable sagging mattress. When it became clear to me that I would be unable to sleep on the mattress, I called the front desk to ask whether we could be moved but no one answered the phone. I spent most of that night trying to get to sleep on the floor. The management was nice about moving us to a much more comfortable room the next day and said we would receive a discount. I was surprised to find later that the discount on the Danforth's receipt was not reflected in my credit card bill. When I called to have the charge corrected, they were not accommodating. Overall, a disappointing experience.
