Really bad!
By ,
No buttons on the telephone, could not make a phone call even in an emergency. Nails protruding under and where trim should be on the desk. Alarm clock did not work, no display . TV was very old picture tube going out half the screen ppl looked green or purple. Room door frame appeared as though it was kicked in at one point, door would not lock. Bathroom faucet was not screwed on properly and the entire faucet moved every time you turned on and off. Microwave was not plugged in and cord too small to reach any outlet without moving it physically into a chair and plugging in, Fridge leaked water all over the floor. The rugs and bathroom floor were sticky with God knows what. Beds were so uncomfortable could not get a decent nights sleep to save my life. Someone was pounding on the locked outside door at 3 am (I was the last room next to the side exit). Was woken up at 3 am by glass shattering noise shortly after the pounding of the exit door. I have staying in Microtel hotels in the past and NEVER had an experience like this one. I will never stay here again. The only plus side of the stay here was that it was not far from UGS campus, it was literally 10 minutes drive down the road.

Needs updating but very comfortable
By ,
I booked a room w/king sized bed online. The front desk clerk was very helpful and even let me know that long-distance calls from the room were complementary...which I LOVED because my cell phone battery was dying. The hotel is 2 floors and has no elevator so I had to haul luggage up a flight of stairs. The room was rather old and in need of a fresh coat of paint, The room had a mini fridge and a microwave oven. There was coffee but no coffemaker in the room. Ice bucket was missing a lid and a plastic liner bag and there were no cups in the room. Once I informed the front desk, thse items were provided promptly. The bed was clean and very comfortable. Hotel was quiet and close to many restaurants and a Publix grocery store. I enjoyed my stay so much that I stayed here again on my return trip home. The 2nd time, I did not make reservations. No king sized rooms were avaialble so I was give a double queen room. It had coffeemaker, ice bucket, liner and cups but the mini fridge reeked of spoiled food and the carpet was dirty and sticky. The beds, however were very clean and comfortable. As it was late and I was very tired, I kept the room and slept soundly. I must note that although I hung a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, housekeeping knocked on the door repeatedly @ 10 AM even though check out is @ 11 AM both times that I stayed. This is one of the more reasonably priced hotels in the area and ,overall, a good value. It is quiet and comfortable and the beds are clean. The hotel just needs updating and (in the case of my 2nd night's stay) new carpet. I loved the free long distance, the location of the hotel and the friendliness of the front desk staff. I would consider staying here again.

Old hotel, but not that bad
By ,
The rooms were just stale smelling because the air was turned off. Once the air kicked in and moved the air around, it was much better. The hotel is older, but not that bad shape. Beds were pretty comfortable. Would stay there again.

Beware. Needs lots of improvements
By ,
I have been going to Athens for several years, since my daughter attended UGA. She now lives there. The Microtel was a good price, and relatively clean. The plus side was they took pets. In all the years I have stayed there I was never charged for my pet. I have stayed probably 8-10 times at this location, always with my pet. I stayed there on June 21 with my pet, and no charge. I even said I would have a pet on the reservation I made on the internet. The room was awful. The smoke alarm was missing from the ceiling. Just the wires hanging down. The TV was fuzzy, The window ledge cushions were ripped, and there was no stopper in the bathtub for those that would like to bathe. The hallway floor is loose as you walk down it, like it is coming apart. I complained, the next morning on checkout, and they were apologetic and said they would take care of it. They saw my dog, and said nothing about a fee. I made a reservation on the spot for Friday night as I would be returning to Athens. Same rate. Upon check in on Thursday, the 25th of June, I was greeted by a gentleman that was supposedly the general manager. I signed the registration and initaled the rate. Same as on the 21st. $59. Which I assumed would be the rate upon checkout. He said, Oh, you need a first floor room for your pet. I said yes. He gave me a room on the far end. Never a mention about a pet charge. The wireless internet does not work passed the first few rooms on the first floor. Room was ok. The particle board desk shows lots of wear and tear. While we were eating breakfast the gentleman that checked us in was firing an employee in front of all the people going and coming. That was interesting. When we checked out, we were told the rate would be $93. I asked why, and the girl said, because you have a pet. I said I have never paid that before in the 3 years I have been coming to Athens. She said it was on the website, and it was a $25 fee. The yahoo website does not show a fee, just that a fee might be charged for certain things. The Microtel website does show a $25 fee for pets. But I have never been charged before, and they saw my dog, even complimented him on several stays. But never a charge. I contacted Microtel Corporate and they were cooperative. I recieved a response from the General Manager at the hotel, expressing that they were sorry and the problems with the room were corrected. But they would not refund the pet charge. This hotel needs lots of improvements. The location is good. The beds are comfortable, and the staff reasonably friendly. But I will not stay here again. It just needs lots of improvement. They have lost a good customer.

Would not recommend except as a last resort
By ,
Staff is friendly, and the price is right, but the rooms are filthy. We booked through a travel site and selected this site based on reviews and location (near family). We checked into 2 rooms and found hair in the sheets, stains on the walls of both rooms, brown stains on the sheets of one of the beds and a boot print on the ceiling of one of our rooms. The staff offered another room, but we declined. We left after securing a confirmed reservation at another hotel. I was extremely dissapointed in this property especially because of the good experiences that I have experienced with other Microtels while traveling on business.
