Beware. Needs lots of improvements
I have been going to Athens for several years, since my daughter attended UGA. She now lives there. The Microtel was a good price, and relatively clean. The plus side was they took pets. In all the years I have stayed there I was never charged for my pet. I have stayed probably 8-10 times at this location, always with my pet. I stayed there on June 21 with my pet, and no charge. I even said I would have a pet on the reservation I made on the internet. The room was awful. The smoke alarm was missing from the ceiling. Just the wires hanging down. The TV was fuzzy, The window ledge cushions were ripped, and there was no stopper in the bathtub for those that would like to bathe. The hallway floor is loose as you walk down it, like it is coming apart. I complained, the next morning on checkout, and they were apologetic and said they would take care of it. They saw my dog, and said nothing about a fee. I made a reservation on the spot for Friday night as I would be returning to Athens. Same rate. Upon check in on Thursday, the 25th of June, I was greeted by a gentleman that was supposedly the general manager. I signed the registration and initaled the rate. Same as on the 21st. $59. Which I assumed would be the rate upon checkout. He said, Oh, you need a first floor room for your pet. I said yes. He gave me a room on the far end. Never a mention about a pet charge. The wireless internet does not work passed the first few rooms on the first floor. Room was ok. The particle board desk shows lots of wear and tear. While we were eating breakfast the gentleman that checked us in was firing an employee in front of all the people going and coming. That was interesting. When we checked out, we were told the rate would be $93. I asked why, and the girl said, because you have a pet. I said I have never paid that before in the 3 years I have been coming to Athens. She said it was on the website, and it was a $25 fee. The yahoo website does not show a fee, just that a fee might be charged for certain things. The Microtel website does show a $25 fee for pets. But I have never been charged before, and they saw my dog, even complimented him on several stays. But never a charge. I contacted Microtel Corporate and they were cooperative. I recieved a response from the General Manager at the hotel, expressing that they were sorry and the problems with the room were corrected. But they would not refund the pet charge. This hotel needs lots of improvements. The location is good. The beds are comfortable, and the staff reasonably friendly. But I will not stay here again. It just needs lots of improvement. They have lost a good customer.
