Well Kept Secret
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/29/09
We were moving away from Memphis in 1996, after having lived there twice (the 2nd time being 12 years), and needed a place to stay for a bit after getting out of our house. We had kept an eye on this hotel, as its' construction was being completed. I went to the management and asked if it would be possible if we could stay while they finished final construction. They miraculously said... "Yes"! I have worked for a large corporation, based in Memphis, for 24 years. I have reason to stay in Memphis quite often, sometimes for extended periods, but not enough to justify the hassles and expenses of renting an apartment. Since my first stay in the Homewood Suites in Germantown, I've stayed no where else, for 13 years now. I've gotten to know the various staff over the years, and many of them know me. If anyone is in a position to make a comment on this place, I guess I would be. Being a person that has some idea of the characteristics of the local area, and the issues that are important, as well as desired, this hotel has met all of those expectations. It, like any other place, has gone through various growing pains over the years. Homewood Suites actually started in Memphis, as a local hotel, the first one being at I-240 and Poplar Ave. The Germantown location came along later and served as a training facility. It was an independent chain for several years before being recognized and purchased by the Hilton Hotel group. This property has just undergone an extensive, beautiful, and overdue, renovation - although the hotel was always generally kept in fairly good condition. I'm not one to complain much, but in the past, I've commented on the parking lot needing pot holes repaired, the carpets needing replacement and the dishes and cooking utensils disappearing from the kitchens. All of those items, and more, have been taken care of. The staff has always been attentive and accommodating. Although I did have a problem with a trainee who sold my credit info to some friends that rang up huge expenses. They set up a sting operation and caught her and the cohorts. Since then, they are very careful about your information. The food is good, as are those that prepare it. It is a very 'homey' place that you can feel comfortable in for a night, or a month. Great location for safety and peace. Many celebrities have stayed here over the years. They used to have their autographed pictures hanging in the lobby, but have since redecorated and removed them. If you are a night worker, or are going to be sleeping in late, you do not want the inside rooms during the months of nice weather. It can be very noisy in the rooms by the pool, basketball court and sitting area, in the courtyard. If you're an early riser, or are not trying to study, no problem. They recently changed their smoking rooms and floors, which I've found to be the only real problem. I'm a non-smoker. Although I don't mind being around smokers, I don't want to smell it in my hotel room. Once it's been permeated into the walls, floors and appliances for years, it's really hard to get out. To make matters worse, they haven't changed the room numbers on the outside that indicate those rooms. So, you have people now smoking in rooms that are supposed to be non-smoking rooms. The third floor used to be primarily non-smoking, now it's the main smoking floor. So on my visit last month (June), I only changed rooms once (This used to never happen). This visit, I made my reservations at the last minute, and ended up having to change rooms twice because of the stench, then, ended up looking at four more before finding one that wouldn't give me a headache (they spray this obnoxious stuff in the rooms to try to cover it up, but it really just makes it worse). I think they made a mistake with the musical chairs of the smoking rooms. Other than that, it's a fantastic place to stay when you're in the Memphis area. Good rates for a place of this caliber.
