The truth about the Crowne Plaza Downtown **Please BEWARE & read all reviews**
I was in town for my daughters Jr. Olympic T&T Competition. We were to be there for 4 days and 3 nights.
I had planned for approx. 3 months for this trip taking in the location, cost, parking, and hotels. After careful consideration I chose the Crowne Plaza Downtown for my family's stay. I reserved a 2 bed executive room. I was told that the executive room is a lot bigger than regular rooms.
When I arrived at the hotel to check in on July 3rd I was greeted friendly and was told up-front that due to a storm the previous night, water had blown in on all the rooms that had double beds. She said the water was around the windows and there was a cleaning crew above our floor (27th) and was working their way down cleaning the rooms. I thought that was fine since they were working on the problem I could be flexable also.
My daughters and I parked and took a few things to our assigned room. The ride in the elevators was another experience, since it goes very fast, we almost got sick. Out in the hall there was lights hung as sconces. They were all going in different directions and looked tacky and unattended. When we opened the door there was a strong smell of mold and mildew. The carpet (dark green) was visibly dirty and heavily stained. The beds were nice and inviting and seemed to be the sleep number bed. I noticed also that the room was very small for and executive room with two double beds. The lighting was poor and the bathroom was extremely small. So small that you could not sit on the toliet and shut the door with out hitting the toliet.
My smallest daughter walked in and straight out saying "This is nasty and I'm not staying here". Everyone was in agreement with her.
We packed our truck back up and pulled around to the front and I told the front desk lady that we could not stay here due to the smell of mold and mildew and the size of the room. She said that was fine and she understood. She cancelled my reservation and gave me a comformation number on the back of her business card.
As one enters the building from the front you will notice the smell and it isn't as grand as it looks like on the internet. The garage that we were to park in was an open air garage, meaning it had a roof and floor but no sides. So the storm that blew in the hotel also blew in the garage leaving large puddles for us to walk through.
We decided location wasn't that important and we stayed at the Westin 1.2 miles south and it was nice, clean, comfortable, and safe parking.
Another nice choice is the Marriott Downtown. The price is comparable to the Crowne Plaza, but the entire hotel had been remodled and it is extreamly clean and nice.
Sorry this review seems long, but I wanted everyone to know my experience and I did read the neg. reviews on different sites for the Crown Plaza. I thought like many others that they may have had a one time bad experience.
PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS HOTEL. IT IS NOT AT ALL WHAT IT IS PORTRAYED AS ON THE INTERNET. THE PICTURES DO NOT SHOW THE CORRECT CLEANNESS OF THE ROOMS, BATHROOMS, OR EVEN THEIR GRAND ENTRY DOWNSTAIRS. IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES OR CHILDREN WITH BREATHING PROBLEMS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER GOING SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Crowne Plaza was $107 with AAA or $116 online. The Westin was $92 online. I did get a better deal. THANK YOU GOD!!!!
