Very nice indeed

I stayed with my mother - a treat for her for Christmas was to visit Bath, a place she has wished to visit since childhood - Jan 2008. We took two rooms, the standard for me, and the executive for her. The only significant difference between the two rooms is the side of the hotel they are on (the executive overlooks te formal front garden, and Bath itself.)
My intial impression of the hotel - upon walking in through some relatively small doors - was 'Oh god, it's really grubby' There is a severely stained rug in front of the reception desk, and the carpeting down the hall, visible from reception looks as though it has been the sponge for countless spilled drinks. I insisted upon inpecting the rooms before checking in, thinkning I was going to have to find accomodation elsewhere. It turns out the rooms - and the rest of the hotel - are/is immaculately clean.
The Collonade Bar is a lovely lounge area, the only downfall being a lack of decent fresh beer. I seem to recall they had Fosters, Grolsch, and Guiness on tap. This is unfortunate, because the local brewery produces an absolutely beautiful traditional bitter named 'Gem', sadly only available in a bottle in the Collonade bar. That being said, they have an extensive (surprisingly large, actually) range of Scots Whiskey, as well as many of the finest Cognacs, Armanacs, and Liqueurs. They seemed also to have a huge range of wines, although I tend to reserve wine for meal time, so I didn't sample them in the bar.
The restaurant serves exceptionally fine food, at what I consider to be very reasonable prices. My mother and I ate a memorably good meal with appetizer (starter) and desert with a fine bottle of French red wine (sorry, I don't remember which it was) for less than £50 each. I had the salmon starter, my mother had some kind of soup. We both chose the steak (I rarely eat steak in restaurants because they are usually only average quality and not cooked correctly - nothing is more dissapointing that a poor steak). This was accompanied by fresh green beans cooked to perfection, still slightly snappy, and a very unusual potato dish which looked like it would be a dissapointment, but turned out to be excellent. I had desert, and remember being satisfied by it, but alas I have forgotten what I ate. I can only assume the Chef is French - the food was too good for a Brit to have cooked it.
Overall, I would say I enjoyed my stay. It's not the finest hotel I have stayed at, in fact probably not even top five, but still deserves a 'Good/Very Good' rating.
