My wife and I just returned from a summer vacation in British Columbia, which included two nights at the Fairmont Hotel in Whistler. While not inexpensive, everything about the hotel is first class. The location, at the base of Blackcomb, is feet away from the slopes, yet within easy walking distance of the main town. The decor is within keeping of a typical large ski resort, and the room comfortably appointed (although the pillows were not just average). The one thing that is missing is a balcony which, in the summer time, would be a welcome addition.
The hotel has three dining options, all of which are good, and offers outdoor seating (with heat lamps). The staff could not have been friendlier - something that permeates British Columbia - and was extremely helpful in recommending activities and restaurants.
I would definitely stay at the Whistler Fairmont again.
