Three Unmemorable Trips This Year
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/20/07
After our last visit to First Colony (7/15/07), I wanted to inform you of our impressions of how the overall quality of your B&B offering has declined over the years. We have been staying at the First Colony, on and off, for over 10 years -- and since your management company took over from the Lawrence family, things have gone downhill.
Although your company has kept the grounds and exterior in excellent condition, and has kept the interior fairly nice, there are several things which have caused us to reconsider our choice of accommodations at the OBX -- and as a result, we have decided not to make reservations at the First Colony anymore.
This was our third visit to FC in 2007 and two out of the three have been disappointing. On our first visit this year, the bed we slept in had a mattress and box spring which appeared to be very old. Plus, there was a sheet of plywood between the two to firm it up. Needless to say, the only reason I knew that was because our quality of sleep -- or should I say lack of -- led me to look at the bedding. I relayed that information to you upon our checkout and I hope that that situation has been corrected.
Our second visit this year was a bit better. It was a different room and the bed was much more comfortable.
On our last visit, we stayed in room 4, I believe, and the bed for both of us was absolutely terrible. And although the mattress and box spring were apparently not really old, the combination was bouncy and when two people laid in the bed, it dipped in the middle. We did not sleep four hours the whole night. Even worse, there was a constant drone all night long, which vibrated the furniture -- you could actually feel it when touching the desk, bed, etc. And when you laid down in the bed, the drone was heard through the pillow. It was not the A/C, either, as we checked. Needless to say, our overall experience was not just unenjoyable -- it was depressing. Hardly what I expected in a reputable, quality B&B. I thought our first visit this year was just an anomaly -- especially after discussing the situation with you at that time.
Further, we noted that the (Sunday) breakfast has been the same on each trip -- and decidedly bland, may I say. Scrambled eggs (cold on our last trip and that was at about 8am), some kind of link sausage, toast, bagels, cereal, biscuits, etc. We were hoping to see some variety -- breakfast casserole, belgian waffles, special pancakes or other -- one of these on any given day. Something else, you and I discussed on our fist visit in 2007.
The bottled water in the room was a nice touch and good advertising -- but that seems to have disappeared. And the staff, although friendly and helpful did not seem to defer to the guests in the breakfast room. We noted one staff woman using both toasters at the same time, while two guests were waiting. And they didn't seem to wait until the guest line was gone from the food line -- they just got right in there and helped themselves to the food. I don't know if perhaps they were getting food to deliver to a guest room but regardless. I would expect that they would do that in the kitchen, not the breakfast area.
I appreciate the fact that you HAVE held the line on prices and I appreciate getting a discount on my last visit, but frankly, had I known what a bad experience we were going to have, I would not have rented the room at any price.
I don't enjoy sending these kinds of letters and I don't really have the time to do so but this is meant in the form of constructive criticism, so that you can get a customer's honest perspective of his B&B experience. After all, your main offering and attraction IS the bed and the breakfast -- and frankly, we have found the First Colony wanting in both areas. And we regret that we won't be able to enjoy your accommodations again.
