Sham not Spa!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/07/09
We were hoping for a nice relaxing stay. The pool was dirty, lot of mineral deposits that were never cleaned, dead insects, and debris. The sink in the room was disgusting brown and cracked. The room was small with one small bottle of shampoo; the pillows were hard and small. No amenities anywhere! Don’t stay here! Awful!

Only if it it's the last place with a vacancy
By bellydancer2007, 07/05/09
I go to Calistoga about 4 times a year and for the first time stayed at the Roman Hot Springs. It was ok, and would go back if I absolutely wanted to be in Calistoga on a certain day and NO other hotel had a vacancy. The pool was small with very limited seating around it and only two tables in the shade--the two tables get reserved and held as early as 7am. There is plenty of seating on the property as long as you don't want to be near the pool. They say there is 3 pools, there is 2 with a hot tub. They allow smoking so our entire time at the pool was disrupted by the heavy cigar and cigarette smoking, it was smelly and gross. The day you check-out they kick you out at 1pm. So, if you get into town at 5pm and stay for one night, you never get a day at the pool relaxing, you only get a few hours. Good points: It is close to the main street and had a great experience with the spa treatments. Bottom line: if you don't mind smoking, don't want to sit pool side, don't mind a small pool and being stacked on top of people and don't need shade then this maybe the place for you.

Liars!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/09
This place makes one wonder if there are any rules about what can and can’t be called a “resort” or a “spa”. This was just a run-down motel with a swimming pool and rude staff. Other issues – we were put in a room overlooking the ghetto across the street where there was loud music playing and the garbage truck came by at 5 AM. The “spa” treatment was a joke. The mud bath is just sloshy potting soil, and the mineral bath is just a bathtub with an inflatable pillow. And the people at the spa have no shame! We left the requested gratuity but apparently that wasn’t enough – they called us on our cell phone to leave a message that they wanted a bigger tip!!! WTF?! The front desk staff doesn’t answer the phone until it rings a dozen times and then are not interested in helping you. This place would be OK for $50 a night but for $120 – save your money and go somewhere else!!!

If this is a resort then I'm the Tooth Fairy!
By TJ2LJ, 05/12/08
I wasn't aware that one can so easily paste the words "resort" and "spa" on random shacks...The Roman Spa Hot Springs and Resort is an ill-played farce- to put it nicely. I booked reservations for 2 nights for Mother's Day weekend after seeing this "resort's" webpage and all of the glowing reviews on said page. I asked for accomodations big enough for 3 people; myself, my husband, and my mother in-law. I was promised a room with 2 queens and a full kitchen. What we got was 1 small queen bed and a LOVELY twin size bed! Our full kitchen was pathetically tiny and outdated. Not to mention, there weren't any real coffee cups, but I guess the staff at this "resort" don't expect anyone to drink coffee anyhow because there wasn't any in our "suite". As for the daily maid service, I suppose you can't expect too great of service at a "luxury resort" right? Their kind service apparently didn't include new towels after 1 day, or new shampoo (which was so cheap I wouldn't even use it on my pets), we didn't even get our cups washed or replaced, just left in the sink. But on the bright side, our queen and twin beds were made when we returned to our "resort". The Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort boasts on their website: "This delightful hotel and hot springs resort is a unique blend of Napa Valley style and warm hospitality in a captivating locale." They should really rephrase this on their website to read "our MOTEL hasn't had any upgrades since the 70's, our staff doesn't even know how to spell the words customer service, so don't expect a lot, our enchanting garden boasts potted flowers from the dollar store, our ice machine is on the fritz indefinitely, our thin walls make for a cozy experience with your neighbor, but hey- at least we only charge $225.00 a night! Enjoy your stay and don't mind the manager's building out back with the wood scraps dangling off the balcony! Needless to say, I will NEVER return to this tourist trap again and I hope that by reading this I'm saving your wallet too! Forget staying in Calistoga- come here for dinner at Brannan's (INCREDIBLE FOOD) but sleep and spa in Sonoma!! Make yourself and your mother in-law happy, trust me...

It's a great spot.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/04/07
This place was recommended to me & my friend & we got a room w/a kitchenette. We really enjoyed ourselves. It was a little outdated but clean & comfortable. (this was a few yrs ago). The next time we went to Calistoga, we stayed at a different place just outside of town. Hated it. Right off the hwy, it was noisy, the spa had no privacy, paint was chipping off the walls. The third time up, my friend & I went back to Roman Spa, took a room toward the back of the hotel right across from the spa that shares it's parking lot & again enjoyed a very pleasant stay. The rooms had been updated, were neat & clean, service was great. We especially love the fact that it is almost in the center of town & we can walk to all of the shops & restaurants that are on the main street. I highly recommend it. I hope to go back again some day.

Not as Expected
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/13/07
Good location, but very few amenities, old rundown buildings, hard mattress, noisy room. We had the massages, the "spa" was in a alley, not professional looking, definitly not a resort at all.

Roman Spa Was lacking
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/05/07
My girlfriend and I lined up the Roamn Spa Resort for a getaway, but found out it was just an older motel with a backroom massage service. We were disappointed, spent too much, and will do better research next time.

No Relaxation
By PM, 04/19/07
The website for the Roman Spa promises gardens, spas, natural pools, but it nothing more than an old motel. Everything looked run down, especially their scary "full service spa" building. The bed sheets were rough, the mattress was stiff, this is not what I would call a "resort". We were hoping there would be an ironing board and iron in our room. When we called to request them, we were told that they were out of irons and ironing boards! There's no WiFi, no coffee maker, and this Motel needs to improve their noisy A/C units. It has poor sound insulation, and inferior quality electronics and appliances in the rooms. The maids hadn't changed the towels, they were wet and had make-up on them! When we advised the staff of this, they sounded curt and rude. There are better, less expensive accomodations near by in Calistoga, look for them.

Don't Waste Your Money !
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/18/07
We were spurred to write this, since we found Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort online in the first place. What a disappointment! After our not-so-great experience, we've read ALL the reviews online for the Roman Spa, and found a bunch of negative reviews buried under way too many gushing, glowing reviews that sound like they're written by the same person. (The owner?) Anyway. Here's what happened to us; We found the web site for Roman Spa and thought this would be a romantic getaway. We called and made reservations. But when we arrived, we realized that the chunk of money that we devoted to this "resort" was actually going to be spent on a MOTEL! We drove up to the office, and the word "Motel" stared us straight in the face from the large sign. We walked the grounds, searching for the "gardens" they advertised. No gardens. Just a few plants in planters around the office and pool. So we tried the "natural" hot springs pool. The water may be naturally heated by a geo-thermal aquafer, but my eyes were stinging from chlorine when we got out! So we went to our "European Inspired Lodgings" room. What!? It was just a regular motel room. And very old and plain at that...no coffee maker, no iron, no internet, no amenities. The walls were so thin that the noise from other guests kept us awake all night. The next day, we sought out their massage rooms...they were in a back alley and reminded us of a Tijuana brothel, so we passed on that experience. This place is not a resort. This place is exactly what the sign on the front of their office says, the word they avoided including on their web page - just an old Motel!

Our Third Stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/09/06
Can't beat the location.....it is in walking distance to almost everything in town. Only drove car when going out of town. We have always found the service very pleasant, room clean and comfortable. It was nice to have a small refrigerator in the room. The pools are excellent and the landscaping was beautiful. The Oasis Spa (just across the parking lot) was wonderfully convenient. Mud & mineral baths were fabulous and attendant very discrete. Massage therapist gave one of the best massages to date.
