Description

Much, much more than a Bed and Breakfast, River House is a full-service inn on the North Fork of the New River, near West Jefferson and not far from Boone. Located in the northwest corner of North Carolina four miles south of VA Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we are far from the bustle of everyday life. There's a mile of riverfront for strolling, wading, tubing, canoeing and fishing. Brown trout and rainbows abound. Walking trails wind through 170 acres. Our uniquely decorated guestrooms are converted farm buildings and feature king-size beds, private bathrooms, Jacuzzis, art, books and country antiques. Awake each morning to coffee at your door followed by breakfast in the main house. For dinner, our restaurant offers exquisite regional cuisine, an international wine list, and a full-service bar with all ABC permits. For on property outdoor adventure we have nine kayaks, two canoes, six tubes and for the land lovers eight miles of hiking trails right out the back door. Visit nearby sites such as New River State Park, Grayson Highlands, Mt. Jefferson and Stone Mountain. Drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Bike the popular Creeper Trail. Ride horseback at Burnt Hill Stables. Play golf at Mountain Aire Golf Course. Shop for antiques, art and pottery. One of the most popular things to do is absolutely nothing! Relax in a rocking chair on the front porch overlooking the river, visit with other guests, and stroll around the property. River House is ideal for a romantic stay. In fact, you can even get married here! Come to one of many special culinary evenings. Our Sunday afternoon salons, featured on UNC-TV, showcase a wide variety of musicians and other artists from near and far. - Information by BedandBreakfast.com

What is all the complaint about?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/24/08
This is a great place for $129 a night. One block away, Laurel Inn is $209 per night with a four night minimum on weekends. Great continental breakfast, great newspaper/magazine selection, Wall Street, Financial Times, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The New Yorker. All available in the sitting/dining room. Free wifi, free local calls, free computer use downstairs. 32" HDTV in the room I stayed in. The bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is nothing fancy, but perfectly clean and acceptable. The room I stayed in had a Duravit sink and a Toto toilet. I had dinner at Garibaldi's one night. Two blocks away. The best meal I had in a while. The famous Ella's is one block away at 500 Presidio Ave.

modest accomodations
By Holly, 10/12/06
This B&B was unique for travel in 2006. The owners were very nice and helpful with information about the city. The only thing I felt a little uncomfortable about was that every time I returned in the evening, the owner would come out and make sure I locked the door properly. I felt a little like I had a "dorm mother". The room was very small and had none of the usual amenities such as a coffee maker (which was sorely missed on a business trip). There was also no thermostat in our room, so I had to go out and buy my own fan as I found it a bit stuffy. The setting was nice, I would describe it best as eclectic. The breakfast was continental style with fancy plates and napkins. There was lots of fruit, cereal, breads, homemade jam (yummy) and the regular array of breakfast drinks. Overall, for the price we paid, I thought it was a great deal. The rooms were clean and the place had a homey feel to it. We did get "shushed" from a nearby guest who didn't like our late night talking so beware that the walls were paper thin. Overall, I thought it was a great place to stay, I felt safe there, and I didn't worry about leaving expensive belongings behind in the room. I would recommend it to my friends and family with the understanding that it may not be for everyone. If I return to SanFrancisco, I would stay there again.

A great value
By Nanci, 12/26/05
Charming Victorian building with colorful history. The owners were friendly and had great recommendations for places to eat. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh every morning. A hidden gem in San Francisco - well worth the price.

No phone, no pool, no pets...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/2/05
and if that doesn't deter you, no clock, no cable TV, no bathtub, street parking, and for 3 days running, the maid removed our shampoo and conditioner from the shower and discarded the full containers, never to be seen again. If you plan to be spending any time in your room, take a good book, because there is no entertainment here.
