Great Location, Excellent Accomodations
First, let's start with location, location, location. If you're visiting NYC for the first time and have a lot of ground to cover, the Carlton is fairly centrally located in the city. It is within easy walking distance to Times Square, Macy's and the serious shops that surround it, close to 5th Avenue, Empire State Building and countless other points of interest. The central location makes it a great launch point for anywhere else in the city you'd like to travel and is convenient to the subways. If you're brave enough to drive around New York City, there is valet parking available as well as a lot next door. We were also fortunate enough to find free street parking right across from the hotel twice during our three days there.
The hotel itself is undergoing (at least when I was there in mid-April 05) some serious renovations and because of that, the temporary lobby is extremely cramped. There is also scaffolding surrounding the lower part of the building which puts a serious dent in the aesthetic beauty of the building. Currently the hotel does not have a restaurant or room service of its own yet but there are plenty of surrounding eateries that will deliver to your room.
Onto the rooms - beautifully appointed with extremely soft sheets and comfy-but-not-too-squishy mattress and featherbed. The bathrooms are spacious and covered with marble floors and shower stall and brass fixtures. The bathtub is separate from the shower. The bathrooms feature better than usual complimentary toiletries. The bedroom we were in was a little small on space considering the price and rating of the hotel but that is easily overlooked with such fine furnishings and comfortable bed. There are personalized guide books in the rooms which not only give you the address and hours of operations for major attractions but also give you itinerary for different ways to experience the City.
The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating although there was one very specific conceirge who was short on service. I would definitely return to the hotel but not until the renovations are finished.
