As a poor student visiting Boston for research, I really thought I'd found a haven in the Berkeley residence...before I arrived. It is affordable, that is its primary charm. Other than that, the charm runs short. Upon arriving, I was told that I would be staying on the men's floor because they were short on space. As a young woman alone in the city, I was not cool with this. I mean, I would be sharing bathrooms, showers and all with men. The only place they could transfer me to was the smoking floor. So I spent the rest of my stay (7 long, ugly days) reeking of smoke and sneezing. I wasn't even aware that there would be smoking accomodations at this hostel - I'm from a nonsmoking state. My room was hot and small, fine for sleeping aside from the hot part, but not a place you could really spend time. There was a free breakfast, but it wasn't good. The bathrooms were dirty, the showers had no water pressure at all, you bathed in the trickle. My stay was unpleasant to say the least. I would have cut my trip in half and spent double on an efficiency hotel room had I known what this place would be like. I don't think this place is "great" for anyone, aside from visitors who can absolutely afford no other place to stay.

Lived at Berkeley in the 1960's
By ,
I lived at the Berkeley for 3 years in the 1960's, What a wonderful place it was then, I met so many single working girls and we had a ball. The food was great. On Sunday afternoons they would have teas for us with sandwiches. At that time you paid according to what your salary was. I have such great memories of the place. I don;t know how it is now as I live out of state. Karen

A cozy escape from the city
By ,
This is an amazing retreat in the middle of the city. It's minutes away from anything that you could want to see or do in Boston. Try it out for a night or two OR become a permanent resident in the heart of Boston for a reasonable price.

A haven for ladies
By ,
I lived here when I transferred on my job at FedEx for a year. The hotel itself is nostalgic and beautiful. I took dozens of pictures of the inside and out. You could decorate your room anyway you saw fit. I put up large Japanese fans on my walls and moved my furniture around. I set up my computer, TV, and VCR. I could go anywhere in Boston from that area. The Commons is close by...the library... the "T". It is directly across the street from the Benjamin Franklin Institute. The lounge has a winding staircase that leads to a messinine with a library. There's a recreation room and a place to park your bicycle. There's a grand piano in the living room which has a fireplace. There's also a private room to practice piano. The food is great.(I gained 10 pounds)Special events such as Halloween for example, included things like having people who specialized in witches and ghosts bring in their slides and videos to show and tell scary stories. The great living room would fill up with residents and the tables would be stocked with refreshments. The programs were all well planned with the holidays and very entertaining. If you got bored, you could go into the lobby and look through all of the brochures of sites to see in Boston, or you could sit out in the gardens and talk to someone, or even walk over to the nearest cafe or restaurant. Ladies from all over the world stayed there. Various cultures were combined and it was a charming place to live. I hated to go. I want to go back someday, but I would hate to leave the city where my grandchildren are.
