Lafayette Hotel and Suites, San Diego

I don't mind cheap hotels, but I do mind excessive dirt and rude customer service, and this hotel has plenty of both! More of a "motel", it was the only thing about San Diego that left a bad taste in my mouth

i'm a single father who works all the time. Every now and then i will get a room so me and my daughter could spend some time together. This is the second time that we've come to the Lafayette and for the second time we were not disappointed. The staff was was great and treated us with respsect and smile. The cleanliness of our room was more than anyone could ask for. The pool area is well kept. The water was clean . Our weekend was perfect. After talking it over with my daughter we havew decided that we will continue to stay at the lafayette for our getaways. I tell my friends and family about the lafayette and would recomend it to anyone. thanks

So we were about to fall asleep, somewhere around 3am, and the phone next to the bed rings. My girlfriend answers it and hears nothing but an odd static. She hangs up the phone. Twenty minutes later as we are both finally dozing off, the phone rings again. On the second ring I say: "Just don't answer it". The third rings scared the crap out of me. I have never heard a phone ring like that in my life. It sounded like a weird off-pitch demonic ring, but it also seemed like there were multiple phones in multiple areas of the room. She grabbed the phone and unplugged it from the wall. We both laid there petrified. The next morning, after a pretty crappy night of sleep, my girlfriend grabs her cellphone. There were two missed calls from an unknown number, both twenty minutes after the demonic call to the phone in our room. The voicemails were the same eery static. We had not given our cellphone number to anyone at the hotel. We did not tell anyone what hotel we were at. It still freaks me out thinking about it. You had to hear that ring.

By far the worst place that we have ever stayed in. This is more of a MOTEL rather than a nice hotel. For starters the walls on the stairway inside of the hotel were written on with marker which the staff didn't even seem to try to clean up. Our room was dirty. One of the walls appeared to have had a huge hole which looked like it was very poorly patched up by a child. Our room was facing the street and one of the windows was broken and rather than replacing it they simply taped a plastic bag over it and tried to cover it up by closing the curtains. That probably explains why we were kept up all night hearing sirens and police sirens. The bathtub was so dirty that we had to shower with sandals on and the water from the shower kept going from hot to cold. The towels appeared to be as old as the molel as well. I'v heard of off white but these towels were practically yellow. When we tried to call downstairs for a wake-up call we found that the room phone did not even work. Then later that night the lights in the whole building went out for about 2 hours because of a car accident down the street. Has this hotel Management ever heard of being prepared for cases like this??? They are called BACK-UP GENERATORS!!! Please don't be fooled by the fancy pictures posted on thier site. This place is as big of a dump as they come. THE UNHAPPY TRAVELER

This hotel is in a great location. It was quick to get to many of San Diego's main attractions. Parking is secure. However, be aware that the low cost does come at a price: - Extremely skimpy breakfast - "Business Center" is one computer only - "Workout Room" is a weight bench purchased at someplace like Sears or JCPenny's - Carpet throughout the complex was extremely worn - We heard the hotel is slowly being renovated. Our room was awful. Ask for a recently renovated room. - Most of the staff acted as if they were doing us a favor in helping us (like getting us another tiny bar of soap since only one was provided and we were staying for four nights)

Forget the negative reviews. I stayed at 3 hotels/motes in my recent trip to California. The Lafayette was by far the best in cleanliness, comfort of the bed, and price. The Lafayette was $58. The others were $85 and $150 a night (so called resort). The staff at all 3 was excellent and very helpful. But the Lafayette accommodations were superior by far. I absolutely recommend the Lafayette. They have earned my business and I will be staying there again. The only reason I don't give them a 5 star review is because they simply are not a Ritz Carlton, but then again, they aren't $400 a night either.

The pictures on the site are misleading. The bathroom was old and not great. Not to mention that you only got ONE normal sized towel!!You kinda felt like you wanted to wash your hands after touching the bed and table. The Tv sucked. The breakfast was ok. The pool looks gross, we did not get in it. Not to mention that the hotel DOES NOT provide pool towels!!! I would not bring a family here. Shady people were at the hotel at the time we were there. Shady as in making out in the pool, loud music, ect.. I would not suggest this place to anyone. Use the extra twenty bucks and go somewhere thats ALOT nicer!!!

NOTHING about his hotel is as advertised, and it is a dump! 1. "In Mission Valley". Not even close. It's located on El Cajon Blvd. and Texas St. If you are not familiar with San Diego, this intersection is not Crack Central, but it is certainly Crack West. Definitely not a safe neighborhood for an evening stroll--unless you are looking for drugs or a hooker of either sex. 2. "Remodeled". Maybe your room will be, but ours certainly wasn't, nor was any one we talked to in a "remodeled" room. The carpets are worn and dirty, furniture clunky, takes up a lot of space, and was chipped, gouged, and burned. There was no fan in the bathroom, which explains the MOLD on the ceiling. Our toilet was clogged the first time it was flushed, and again later the same night. Maid service seemed to consist of making the bed and rinsing, not cleaning, the tub and toilet. 3. "Heated Pool". Not. Also, there are no steps into the pool. If you can't climb up and down the small metal ladders at each corner of the pool, you won't be using the pool anyway. 4. "Spa". Well, true, there is a spa, but all the jets are capped. In addition, the hotel is open on the weekends to the local college students. For a small fee they can use the facilities, and they do, en masse. As a result, every weekend is like a noisy, raucous frat party. They take up every available chair and lounge in the pool area, throw beach balls, roughhouse in the pool, and overall prevent any type of relaxation or enjoyment of the limited facilities. Stay somewhere else! Motel 6 would be a better experience.

I was originally assigned a 1st floor room right on the corner of 2 busy streets. The only other room available was a handicap room, 155, located just off the lobby. They said it would be quiet. When we got back to the hotel there were tons of drunks having a party in the lobby, 30 feet from our room, and right in front of the front desk. At midnight I had it, called the front desk, and they said they'd say something. It just got louder. Screaming continued for another hour, with doors slamming all night. If you want a party hotel, fine. Just state what your mission is. We checked in to have a room to sleep in, and we didn't get it. I want a refund of the $75 fee. The room was a total waste, and I couldn't change hotels at midnight. By the way, the room hasn't been updated in 30 years. Spend some $, or sell to someone who will. Photographer did a great job capturing the best angles of this old place. My girlfriend and I thought we were super cool when we found out they had upgraded us to a Penthouse suite for free. Little did we know the elevator was broken and we had to walk up 4 flight if stairs. The room was pretty cool, but looked like it was last updated in the 70's. The bed was comfy, but the pillows were nearly a foot thick, meaning we couldn't even use them. We stayed spring break weekend, so there were a lot of younger people there partying with loud music. The windows were paper thin. I must have woken up no less than 5 times through out the night from weird ventilation noises. The pool looked super nice, but unless you can stand the noise, I don't recommend staying here.
