Snarky waiter
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/25/09
Wonderful food, from the luscious oysters to the Bananas Foster. Too bad the waiter felt it necessary to evaluate us and insult us with little digs culminating in a question as to where we live. Before we could answer, he offered his own guess- a least desirable town. It's a shame, but we won't be back.

new chef......okay I guess
By ChipS, 5/5/08
Came to try out the food based mostly on hearing James Carpenter was the new Chef. We loved James at Della Femina. Everything was average at best, especially considering what you pay (Welcome to Sag Harbor) Service was snotty, apparently smiling is not allowed. James' food was strangely uninspired (except for the salad which was exceptional) The overall attitude is just uptight, must be an east coast vs. west coast thing. Take me back to San Jose please, more fun, better food, and FRIENDLY!

disturbing experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/15/07
The Hamptons meets the Adams Family. I know personal attacks are frowned upon, but this adds to the whole experience of the American Hotel. The owner is a very creepy guy who has a Jack Russell Terrier who runs around the restaurant and defecates. When I pointed thus out to the owner, He told us to leave, or he would call the police. This was after we paid an $800 bill.

Great food in a cozy setting, especially in the winter when a fire blazes in the bar dining room.
By wendy, 11/9/06
high prices but reliable great food in a romantic setting, with friendly waiters who always remember you (one dug me out of a snowbank two winters ago, after stopping and seeing my car had skidded off a deserted country road), and the menu always includes some dietetic additions. Also love the game in winter.

Warm welcome?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/24/06
I went for dinner with three men, all of us Asian and dressed in casual attire, but the manager warmly informed my party to "come back before noon tomorrow to apply for a job." I replied, "we'll come back tomorrow, can we have dinner now?" because we were only there to have a nice dinner. Aside from this incident, the food and service was fine.

American Hotel Restaurant
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/8/04
Perhaps we have higher expectations of food coming from Manhattan. But as Sag Harbor and the surrounding "villages" are an outpost of the wealthier set, we expected far better than we received at the American Hotel. After ordering a salad for starters, we were tipped off immediately by its gigantic size! The barbequed duck (field greens, with duck, mango and sour cherries -- which were simply dried cherries) was tough and dry. The fish (tuna and salmon) both over-cooked even after the wait-staff asked for our preference. We skipped dessert to cut our losses and headed for "Scoop" in East Hampton.
