Best place in downtown area
By Russ, 12/28/09
Not much to look at from the street but don't let that fool you. Staff is friendly and grounds are beautifully decorated. Some staff have been employed for over 20 years and the gardens are very well kept with some types of orchids almost always in bloom. Car park is guarded and private and gated which is a BIG plus in Goroka. The Lahani Room is a good place for corporate events or special meals. The upstairs dining area opens to a great outdoor area which overlooks the back grounds and pool area. Wireless internet available. Tons of souvenir vendors and bilum sellers just outside the front entrance. A nice place to escape the hustle and bustle and grime of normal Goroka although close to shops. Has 2 recently renovated indoor squash courts in back and a flat lawn for volleyball or kids games. Great spot for the kids to swim with plenty of poolside lunch tables under umbrellas. Good chips and pizzas and exceptional coffee. Food and drink is good but has recently become a bit overpriced (K5 for a can of Coke). Considering that other than the Pacific Gardens (which is more on the edge of town with nicer grounds and better although slightly higher priced food) this is the only main option, it's the only place with a pool and definitely nicer and more western than any other place in town (with the exception of the Pacific Gardens which isn't as well suited for kids or families without the pool. The gift shop has an excellent assortment of goods and at good prices. Very nice place overall and one of the best safe and clean havens in Goroka. Expat workers in the area bring their families for weekends (you can use the pool and carpark if you buy lunch there) for swimming and pizza, burgers or chips by the pool. Have been here about 10 times over the past 2 years.

Best spot in town
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/13/06
Caters to "ex-pats" and locals alike. I have spent many days lounging by the pool at "the Bird" and enjoying their delicious food. It's the place to go if you want to get away from the sights and sounds of Goroka. The staff are helpful and friendly and are glad to offer insider's advice on where to shop and visit. Surrounded by beautiful gardens full of lush tropical plants. Next door is a great local artifact market and is a stone's throw from the airport. Check out the Mandarin, a great Chinese restaurant across the street.

Don't Miss It
By Ryan, 12/29/05
As a Peace Corps Volunteer I spent many a day at "The Bird". The food is amazing, staff excellent and overall it offers a sometimes needed break from the raw culture of Goroka town.

Wonderful People
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/18/04
This is one of the best places I have stayed, especially for the price. I've spent 3-4 times the money staying in dumps in USA. The staff are the friendliest and most helpful I've ever come across.

Escape the real world of PNG
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/20/04
'The Bird' is a world away from the streets of Goroka, PNG. One step through the doors, opened by a uniformed doorman, and you are transported to another dimension, a world of pampering and pleasure. It is a paradise!!!

One warning -- the ice cream at the pool, while it has improved, it is still not that great. It is worth the price, you get what you pay for.

The gift shop has good prices for local crafts.
