Substandard for price & name

We stayed at the Rowland, NC. Holiday Inn Express because it was the closest national chain hotel we could find for the U.S. Open golf tournament in nearby Pinehurst. Since we made the reservation in advance, we were charged twice their standard rate per the card. We erroneously believed that we could be assured of some standard of quality and service. We were wrong.
The rooms were dark and dingy, and the air conditioning did not work. We were moved into another room that had a tub that drained very slowly, shower curtains that did not fit, and cracked and broken tile flooring. The TV only got a clear picture on a few channels, and the hair dryer kept tripping the breaker.
Another couple that made the trip with us also had to be moved for a bad A/C, and their phone did not work.
Because of the tight room situation due to the golf tournament, we had no choice but to stay. I was very disappointed that Holiday Inn would allow their name on this establishment.
I may stay in a Holiday Inn Express again, but not until I see it first.
