Stay Away
By ,
We booked this hotel from a vacation package bought from Cosco. Later found out that it includes a 90 minute sale pitch for a time share (no way). When I first arrived, the front desk told us their computers were down and we could not go to our room. A staff member had us wait in the lobby while a concierge told us about the activities they offered. I told her I wanted to book a dive and was told that I would have to use the one company that the sunset hotels use. Not what I wanted. They stated if I wanted to scuba dive with another company I would have to book it myself. I did sign up for a snorkel trip with the hotel. It was canceled for no reason and I did not receive an apology or explanation. I had to argue for a refund. I was told that all they could do for me was to get a free breakfast. Throughout the trip, the hotel staff constantly lied to us. It seemed that the only thing they would go out of their way for was trying to find new ways to scam us.

DON'T BE A SUCKER
By ,
PURCHASED IN 2002. "BUY INTO ONE YOU BUY ALL' IS WHAT WE WERE TOLD. LIKED STAYING AT FISHERMAN'S VILLAGE. DID SO FOR 2 YEARS AND THEN WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE UNLESS WE PAID AN UPGRADE FEE. ALL INCLUSIVE FEES ARE OUTRAGEOUS FOR WHAT YOU GET. LOTS OF NICE PLACES TO STAY IN CANCUN BUT NOT HERE. SAVE THE ANNUAL MAINTENANCE FEE AND USE FOR BETTER PLACES TO STAY. REMEMBER THAT A CONTRACT WRITTEN IN MEXICO ISN'T WORTH THE PAPER IT'S WRITTEN ON.

Great time for all!
By ,
The resort was really nice and the service was excellent. I love the fact that we were able to walk to several resturants and shopping. The view of the ocean from our room was breath-taking. I look forward to returning next year.

Yes this is the place to be!
I hesitated to go to Cancun because of the swine flu but i'm glad i went! The flights were super cheap so i'm glad i took the chance. I don't know what swine flu they're talking about because in Cancun there wasn't a sign of it. Anyhow i stayed at the amazing Royal Sunset...this resort i'd recommend to ANYONE, whether you're traveling with friends, significant others, children. I loved the beach, you WILL get a tan in less than 30 minutes (yeah bring the sunscreen) and the food is delicious! And now to their exotic looking rooms...wow the rooms are beyond clean. This is what i look for in a hotel room. I have been to resorts that are 5 star and their hotel rooms are NOT this clean and beautiful. I'm glad Royal sunset is living up to my standards and they are 4 star, not 5.

This is the place to stay in Cancun
By ,
I absolutely loved this resort. I'm real picky when it comes to the rooms and they did not disappoint. It was immaculate. The food was great and don't let me start on the beach...just amazing. The water was so clean. I had a great time.

Beware of sleezy and pushy sales people
By ,
My mother-in-law had gotten us a 4-night stay at the hotel as a result of telemarketing with the understanding that we were supposed to attend a 90 minute sales presentation about the resort on our second day there. We were surprised to find that the room was clean and pretty decent with a view of the laguna but that was the only nice thing about this hotel. The staff were horribly rude starting with the receptionist that checked us in. We didn't sign up for the all-inclusive plan (thankfully!!!) and when we went to find something to eat at 9:30 on the night we arrived, our only options were either a very noisy tent with a $39/person buffet dinner or a snack bar by the pool. We chose the snack bar and waited for 15 minutes for someone to show up and take our order...noone ever came out!!! So we walked to the nearest shopping center and ate at Chilli's (not exactly our idea of an authentic Mexican meal). The beach at the hotel was tiny and the pool equally as small and overpopulated. The bar in the reception area was always full of loud drunk people, so if this is your idea of a good time, you might like this hotel. We absolutely HATED it and hated how commercial and Americanized Cancun is and even though we had our last night paid for at the Sunset Royal, we left and headed for Playa del Carmen which is soooo much better and nicer!!! Oh, and the whole 90-minute sales pitch....get ready for a full day (ours was 5 hours) of listening to sleezy, pushy, yucky sales people. Our actual "tour" guide was very nice which is why we felt like sticking with him through the entire tour but once we got into the sales room, it was an absolute nightmare. We had three different people try to convince us to buy and they just would not give up until we finally got up from the table and left. So glad we didn't fall for their scheme!!! I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone looking to have a nice and relaxing vacation in authentic Mexico. Escape Cancun as soon as possibel....the hour drive south to Playa del Carmen is worth your time

Never going back!
By ,
I want to start out saying that the location of this resort was in fact very good. In the middle of the everything and totally walkable distance to a lot of restaurants and bars. The consierge service, on the other hand, was very useless though. They were not helpful, were not happy for us to be there, were just plain rude. We've stayed in many hotels and resorts around the world and never been treated so poorly. The vacation that all of us were waiting for turned into a massively rude encounter with every service indusry employee. The only thing they wanted to do is to up sell us on their timeshare programs and sell more timeshares to our guests. Ridiculous! The cleanliness was all right, I want to say. Nothing more than an average Mexican 3 star hotel. Was it worth the time/money? Not at all. We wish we stayed somewhere else where they actually care about the well being of their guests. Would we ever go back? to Cancun..Maybe; to Sunset Royal - Never!

Great time in Cancun
By ,
My husband, my 7-year old son and myself visited this resort through an RCI exchange. We agreed to attend a sales presentation in order to receive discounts on excursions. It was worth the 2 hour tour and sales pitch. We took advantage of all the perks. We did not buy any timeshares, because as good of a time that we had, it is not somewhere we want to visit every year. The staff there is WONDERFUL! My son especially loved Jimmy, he's a comical character. Food at the buffet was not the best. I didn't think you could go bad with food in Mexico, but I was wrong. However, we took advantage of the snack bar by the pool which had our favorites fresh hamburgers, fries, and other finger foods. The room service food is also good. MEN DONT FORGET YOUR LONG PANTS!!! We were not told prior to arriving to the resort that the hotel restaurants have a dress code for dinner. My husband is a shorts kinda guy and did not bring long pants so we could not eat dinner in either restaurant in the hotel. However, after a brief conversation with the manager, he did his best at accomodating our needs. He offered to have a server bring up our lobster dinner to our room and also provided us with a quaint little spot in a corner of the restaurant to eat. It was okay with us. Other than this, WE HAD A GREAT TIME. Wonderful place for families not for honeymooners or adults only looking for leisure and quiet romance.
