Things Do Change

We had our fourth trip to Eight Gables, this time under new owners. All that we loved about it is still the same - the decor, the location, the great rooms; however, some things have changed, and that is the graciousness and friendliness we were so accustomed to. In times past, the previous owners would come visit with us at our tables to insure everything was to our liking, plus, we were always invited into the kitchen at anytime. Eight Gables used to make the kitchen "the heart of the home". This time as I was looking for someone to tell me how to get hot water for tea, the owner looked at me from the kitchen and shut the door, as if I were not to look into the "hallowed" area. We asked for a table by the window, and were made to feel that it was an inconvenience. We never met the owners until it came time to pay, and they were friendly only after we made attempts at conversation. The place is basically the same with a few decorating changes that give the dining area a more formal look. The property used to be secluded, but now behemoth condo units have been built across the street, and sadly, this little out-of-the-way place won't be out-of-the-way much longer. The young lady that checked us in was so accomodating and friendly, meeting us on the front porch as we stepped out of our car. There was confusion about which weekend we booked, so she gave us a complimentary upgrade to a suite, which was really quite nice. The room was in a separate building that used to be the previous owner's private home, so it was very comfortable, well appointed, with a nice whirlpool tub and private screened-in porch, plus, a common living room and kitchen/dining area downstairs. The garden is very well kept, with local plants in abundance. We were late coming in that evening after a show, but our desserts were left out in our room for us, as well as turn-down of bedding. We chose not to eat dinner there after seeing so few choices on the menu. Breakfast was really good, and I was able to opt for oatmeal, while my husband had the breakfast casserole, served with breakfast breads. Overall, it is still a wonderful place, and perhaps in time the new owners can learn a bit of "Southern Hospitality".
