Won't be staying here again

This was our first time to Ocean Isle Beach. We picked the Ocean Isle Inn because we were able to get a beachfront room last minute and because it seemed to have the most of what we were looking for.
The inn looked nice enough from the outside. The gentleman at the desk checked us in quickly. He was pleasant during check-in, gave us the keycards, and sent us in the direction of our room.
As we entered the building’s hallway, we were immediately hit by the smell of urine. The room itself smelled OK, so I thought we were home free – but, I think they must have aired out the room before we arrived, because as the night progressed, the smell of urine from the hallway made its way under the door and into our sleeping quarters. I considered checking out the next morning, but I didn’t want to lose my money and couldn’t find another place beachfront on the island. So, we stayed the 3 nights. However, when we went out to the mainland the next morning, we picked up a can of Febreze and sprayed in generously on everything in the room several times a day until we left.
The view was beautiful, but the output for the air conditioner took over a major portion of the balcony and, when the air conditioner kicked on, we could no longer hear the waves from the beach and were hit with hot air (since they don’t have central air, I guess there is really no way around this). That was the problem on the outside – on the inside, as the night progressed, the air conditioner started putting out a similar smell to the urine in the hallway. We sprayed it with Febreze as well, but it didn’t help all that much.
The beds were very comfortable, but you had to jump up to get on them and pray you landed in the right spot, so you didn't fall off (it became kind of a game for us). Unfortunately, the sheets kept coming off during the night, so I found myself getting up to pull down the corners several times a night.
The hallway carpeting from one end of the complex to the other is starting to fray and is obviously not cleaned very often, if at all. Obviously shows their lack of concern for maintaining the place.
And, to top it off, the first morning, when we walked down the stairway to go to the car, there was a half-eaten chicken carcass, covered in flies, sitting on the landing near the carport. I should have reported it, but was interested in how long it would be left there, considering all the other things we’d already encountered. After three days, it was still there and it was evident that an animal had gotten into it the night before.
The continental breakfast was acceptable, but I would not call it “deluxe.” We’re not big breakfast eaters, so it filled the void. However, the carpeting in the breakfast room was filthy and looked like it had never been cleaned.
It probably would have been a nice, quiet place to stay if the connecting door to the rooms next door didn’t have a one-inch gap. The lady on one side had some sort of respiratory problem, which caused her to cough non-stop. And, the room on the other side had screaming children. Because of the gap under the door, it was if they were in our room with us. We didn’t really hear anything through the walls, so if the gaps under the doors were covered, I think we probably would have had a nice quiet room.
Although we absolutely LOVED this island, we will not be staying at the Ocean Isle Inn ever again.
