As a weary traveler who was off the beaten track of the interstate, I spotted this unique inn nesttled on the river in the middle of no where. I was delightfully surprised at my small non-smoking room that was on the river on the first of 3 floors. I chose to eat in the dining room and I have to say the waitress was friendly, efficient and the food was great. I was first greeted by a lovely lady who started the evening off in a very charming manner, I suppose a hostess, who had an air of class and worldliness about her, that spoke of a metropolitan city in lieu of a small town like this.I would highly recommend taking the time to stop an enjoy an evening from the past-finer days.

My daughter and I stayed for the first time on the weekend before Thanksgiving 2011. I made reservations at the last minute, so we could only choose between a smoking room and a suite, so I chose the suite. The charge for the suite was nearly twice that of the smoking room, but the price was actually comparable to getting a regular hotel room for the night in Charleston. Since Glen Ferris Inn was much closer to our destination, and we really wanted two rooms, it was well worth it. The historic Inn, its grounds, and the views of the mountains and the river falls are all beautiful. It was particularly nice to see it all from the windows on the third floor. Our suite rooms were elegantly furnished, the beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was surprisingly modern and clean. The living room area had a kitchenette, a dining table, some comfy chairs, and an Armoire with a TV that received the typical cable/satellite channels. There was clearly a spot in the kitchenette for a mini-fridge, but it was missing. That would have been nice to have, but for our needs, the ice bucket was fine. The staff was friendly, and the waitress in the restaurant at breakfast was particularly helpful. Despite the fact that there were few other diners early on Sunday morning, when my daughter ordered waffles, she was kind enough to recommend the half size order. She was correct, since even the half size portion turned out to be quite large. The entire breakfast at the Inn was excellent and really was a bargain. We look forward to returning to Glen Ferris Inn again in the future. It would be great to visit during other seasons, and since their breakfast was so great, we’d like to try their dinner menu sometime.

we made dinner reservations, which i am assuming did not really need, but the food was wonderful, little slow to get to table, but we went with the attitude that it was going to be laid back and not 5 star, this is the first time i have stayed here for the night, so was a bit supprised at the slightly rude employees, the hotel owner welcomed us and was genuinely warm, the desk clerk however not so much, as we wanted to split the bill three ways, i have worked in the hotel business, it is simple math, and yes the hotel is worn and a bit on the rough side, BUT, it is clean, and my bed was so comfortable, the traffic was terrible outside the window, but of course that is not the hotels fault. i understand that out of town workers live here during the week, so be prepared for the non ammenities. ie, no hairdryer, no coffee in rooms, shower curtain ripped from the bars. I just wish that the ecomomy could support this grand ole inn and she could be renovated to the grand lady that it could be. once again, if you go here dont expect the waldorf experence, just a place to lay your head

My wife and I drove up from Saint Albans (an hours drive) to try the Cajun Feast advertised in the local paper. We had driven by there several times and always wanted to stop and try the food. We made reservations for 6PM. We arrived to find the lobby filled with people and were told it was first come first served. We got a table at 7:30. The service was very slow. It was at least 15 minutes before anyone even took our order. A couple was seated at a table next to us at least 20 minutes after we were seated. They were immediately served. We complained and were told by the waitress that she was trying as hard as she could. We later saw the cook come out and receive a tip from the couple. The food was nothing more than standard cafeteria fare with a little so called Cajun sauce. They were out of most of the advertised sides so they substituted whatever they wanted without consulting us. The crab stuffed corn fritters were only half done. This was definitely a wasted evening. We will not go back!

My wife and I arrived at 7PM on 10/15/10 after making reservations guaranteed with my credit card. When we arrived, we were told that we had no reservation. The young male clerk who made took our information never recorded our reservation. When I asked for a confirmation #, he said it was not necessary since it was guaranteed with my card. The hotel was booked and we were left starnded in this place from nowhere. The clerk called the nearest town which was about 18 miles away and told us there was only one room left in town and it $100 more than our reservation rate. They made no effort to compensate us for the difference. No service here and beware of the area!!!!!

We drive from proctorville,ohio to have lunch or occassionally dinner at the inn. Food is always good and the staff pleasant.sometime we plan to stay when time allows.We have been there about seven times

I work at the Inn. All housekeeping was dismissed and new ones hired. And yes you may have found the carpets soiled. Guest working in the coal fields rented the room prior to your arrival and unfortunately there was insufficient time to clean the carpets and to be dried prior to your check-in. I feel certain that no one would want a room when the carpets are wet! Suits are rented to workers since they can get more men in the room and therefore the cost of the room for each worker is less than paying for a single or double room. If you ever lived around the coal fields you know how easy carpets become soiled. The windows did has some plastic in a few crack areas as the workers asked if we could do something with the windows shaking as when trucks came along the windows would shake keeping them awake - there was NO toilet paper in any cracks. For a temporary fix plastic covered with tape was put in the cracks so that the workers could get sleep. Soon after your check-out the plastic was removed and the cracks were sealed off. As for the condition of the bathroom when you arrived I feel certain someone did go to your room and cleaned the bathroom once this was brought to the attention of the front desk clerk-if not they should have. There was no excuse for the former housekeepers not to have your room in top condition for you and your family. The new housekeepers are keeping all the rooms clean and spotless and they are fully aware that if the rooms are not in top shape for the guest they also will be dismissed. Guest need to understand also that the rooms are in the condition they are in because of guest not staff. For instance just recently one of the suits was rented out and it took housekeeping 3 hours and removed 7 big bags of trash to get it rentable. Housekeeping can clean and clean but when something comes up that maintenance needs to fix it may take a little longer. I do apologize to you and your family and wish the room was in a better condition when you checked in. Hopefully with the two new housekeepers we all at the Inn can stay on top of things. It is a beautiful area and the Inn is still a great place to stay and visit. Unfortunately, every motel/inn has problems. We are not alone but we make every effort in making sure rooms are rentable and yes there are times when something is overlooked. Again with the new housekeepers recently hired if you ever return we will have the room perfect for you and your family. Again we at the Inn apologize for your stay to have been an unpleasant one.

We paid for a three bedroom suite for five nights & looked forward to visiting this beautiful area. While the area and view are great the Glen Ferris Inn is not. The bathroom was filthy with urine dried all over the base of the toilet. The carpets were dirty and stained. What appeared to be once beautiful quilts on the beds were stained and looked dirty as well. The windows were the worst I have ever seen; they were smeared with filth and had what appeared to be toilet paper in the cracks to fill what should have been repaired however the moisture that had accumulated was molding all over the wet toilet paper. Voicing out complaints did nothing but each time we were told that the person responsible to clean would probably be fired soon. One day we came back at night to find the door left wide open. We did not find anything missing however it is sad that what could be a wonderful vacation get away turned out to be something we just wanted to get away from. I hope that someone who cares about the Inn takes the reign. The current owner seems to have lost their way while the once beautiful Glen Ferris Inn decays from neglect.

Glen Ferris Inn since 1839, the sign said. I found it in 2009 late, on a cold night, exhausted after a bad wreck. 3 1/2 hours on the scene, cold, tired, stranded. You took us in, warmed us, sheltered us, fed us. Insurance wouldn't cover the room, my money in fuel, in a wrecked truck. Did you turn us away? No, you sheltered yet another weary traveler. This was a great experience-we got there at closing(they even came to the door to make sure we came on in) and they still served us and even though food was limited (but that means all is fresh) it was superior and the service was beyond expectations. thank you for this experience - the bread/salads and Orange Roughy was great and even the tea was the best
