keep looking

sounds and looks like it might be a great place to stay right? WRONG! My mother asked to see a room when reserving this place for my trip. They refused and no wonder. Upon getting there there was a plugged up toilet in full view and our room was literally falling apart. Not quaint- gross! It also was really loud- lots of street noise. When we checked out after 1 night, they didn't care or ask why, did not apologize and insisted on keeping 3 nights cost. It is bad. They don't care.

Rude, rude, rude, uncomfortable, loud, etc!!!
By ,
I don't mind staying in cheap motels. I'm not posh! But the Summer of Love room was AWFUL (so was the next). The mattress was so hard if one person would move, the other would feel it. NO SLEEP. The staff downstairs argued and argued with us on their little control trip until I insisted, after being nice for, like, ever... Then they moved us into another room which had NO CURTAINS to block the light. Good morning! They also refused to move our floor mattress, rude, rude, arguing. Then we asked the maids, and "Oh, no problem!!" (Control issues??) The toilets were constantly blocked, so sometimes for all rooms there was only one toilet. You also could hear everything between the walls. I don't care where this is located...I'd stay anywhere else!! (Also, the rooms are so fakely decorated '60s...uh '90s newage style. They could do so much better.)

Pass on this one.
By ,
I needed a place near Golden Gate park so I stayed in one of the cheaper rooms here, around $130 nite. Only one dim light in room. Nite stand very wobbly. Found dead critter in bed, looked like lice. Bathroom was cute and clean. Restaurant was hippy like with bad service. I've stayed in a lot of hostels, etc. I'm not that picky. The dead lice gave me the creeps!

innkeeper needs customer skills
By ,
i stayed at the red vic on 4-11-08. the place is relatively clean and very convenient for sight seeing. the man who checked me in was very nice and efficient. shortly after i arrived i went back down to lobby to get an extra bath towel. there was now a young woman at the front desk and another person working in the cafe. as i approached the desk she was dialing the telephone, and to my surprise did not give me any attention and proceeded to make her phone call. i quickly asked her if i could get another towel and she put her finger up and pointed to the woman in the cafe. i walked over and asked the cafe person, who said she had nothing to do with the inn. so i went back to the reception desk...now another woman had arrived to check in. the young woman continued with her personal phone call for 5 minutes while we waited for help. i decided to interrupt her and asked her AGAIN for a towel. she finally asked the person to hold and went to fetch my towel claiming it was the 'owner' who was ill .the other lady checking in (as well as myself) could not believe the lackadaisical demeanor of this front desk person. i suppose she doesn't know that the hotel guest are paying her salary. every other aspect of my stay was sufficient. perhaps some members of the staff should have a lesson in customer service. p.s. i am a manager at a small rural inn and would be appalled if any of my employees treated guests this way.

Beware of Sami
By ,
Sami, the owner is nice in the beginning. Then, if you have thoughts of your own, she will harass you and make you feel guilty: "So you don't care about my vision of making the world a better place?" Stay away!!!

A real Taste of the Summer of Love
By ,
It was quite by accident that I found this place but it is convient for medical appointsments (UCSF is close by) and brought back memories of times spent on Haight Street. The room are wonderfully decoracted and no two are a like and were decorated by Sami Sunchild. Her works are displayed throughout the hotel. Music, poetry, movies are available downstairs during the evening including discusions. Food is also available. Clean and comfortable. A true living history museum. Public transportation out the door. Bathrooms are a riot - especially the fishtank toilet tank. No televisions are a nice addition. My recommendation as an escape from the ordinary. cozy place that's not too far from everything
By ,
we found this place thru the internet and the place was great for our 1 night stay. Sami Sunchild, the owner, is VERY friendly and very personable. Laid back attitude helps when you have an 8 month old traveling with you. They have many nostalgic photographs and cut-outs as well as unique theme-based rooms and bathrooms (btw, gigi's room is the only room i think with a private bath, which was great, and you can also use any of the other bathrooms there). we couldn't stay for the free breakfast, but otherwise, everything else was great. location is a plus, Haight St is not so far from Lombard St, Golden Gate Park, and the Fisherman's Wharf. they don't have free parking though, and parking is hard to find during the daytime, but after 7PM, street parking is free until 6 AM the following day. TIP: check-in towards the afternoon, go sight-seeing during the daytime, then street park at night. it worked out great for us :)

So-so
By ,
The rooms were adequate. Service was a little too laid-back for us. Staff were friendly but a bit unprofessional: in the attached restaurant, they hinted heavily for tips, even before the meal was over. Stay here for the quirky Haight experience, but if you really want comfort and service, go elsewhere.

Strange but fun little place
By ,
Quirky and Hippie like atmosphere. Neat little breakfast in the morning and nice staff. It's a very old renovated Victorian so don't expect impeccable, undusty corners that's part of it's charm,

Friendly, clean, cool rooms...so long as you don't mind sharing a bathroom.
