Ameritania at Times Square, New York

We checked in for a five day trip. We entered the room and could not believe how small it was. The room was filled by the bed. There were no side tables - just one standing lamp. We then looked for a cupboard for our clothes (staying in a small room for five days with a messy husband... a cupboard is a necessity... not a luxury). There were no cupboards or even a draw. The only other furniture was a chair and a basic trolley with a TV on it. My husband and I were lost for words thinking how we were going to manage. We also noticed that the smoke alarm sprinkler had been cut off and there were wires hanging out the ceiling. The room stank of stale smoke and we had requested a non smoking room. We went down to reception and asked for a non smoking room. The receptionist assured us that it was and we assured her that someone had been smoking in it! She then let us know that unfortunately there were no other rooms with a Queen size bed but there was a room with two double beds - we jumped at it as the room had to be bigger than the current room as two double beds would not have fitted in our room! We went up to our new room - well it was chalk and cheese - two lovely beds, side tables, cupboards and draws... exactly what we thought we had originally booked! Clearly they were trying to pull a fast one on us to see whether we would accept a dodgey room! The next day we looked for the ice machine to have a drink in our room. We couldn't find one so we called down to reception who informed us that the ice machine was broken. We asked whether we could have a bit of ice from the bar - the famous Twist lounge advertised on the site. They informed us that the Twist lounge was closed for renovations.... we were there for five days during the week... we did not see any workmen. In summary it seemed like the hotel used to be stylish and very good but is now run down and battling. We would not recommend you stay there. We did however have an awesome time in New York!

My wife an I had the room from hell. Room 415; very small, wet floors, dark brown water, very low wattage light bulbs in teh bathroom that I could not even shave with; broken furniture; no heat (from a very old radiator, with no turn device); had towels for only one person. After complaining, they put us into an even smaller room with no heat. Had given us an electric heater, that DID NOT work. After strong complaining the departing AM, we were allowed 50% off (which we have not seen as yet). Staff was friendly, but that doensn't make one comfortable in the room

The room was tiny but I had everything I needed. Most staff are accommodating except for that one guy at the entrance in the afternoon shift. Location is really great! - just a few blocks away from Times Square. The only weird thing was, they cleaned up my room, threw my soap away without me telling them so.

Sure, the location can't be beat but if you are looking for a nice place this migh not fit your definition. My room was noisy and smelled bad.

I am only 12 years old and i went to the Ameritania hotel for my first time in New York to stay. The staff greeted us very well and were very polite. We always had the cleaner coming in and asking if our room needed to be cleaned and our room was always in a nice condition. Even when our room keys broke, they took care of it without fuss. One of the good things about the hotel was that the location was very near to all the places we wanted to go so we didn't need to walk far.

After reading other reviews, I was rethinking my decision to stay at this hotel during the Thanksgiving Holidays. I'm glad I didn't go somewhere else. The Ameritania is well staffed with courteous, helpful employees. We were greated by helpful doormen and quickly checked in by the waiting receptionists. Yes, the rooms are small, but that's normal for most of the older hotels. Want a bigger room, stay at the newer hotel for 2-3 times the price. The location is fantastic; 54th and Broadway. The hotel is in the middle of everything and withing walking distance of Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Theater District and Central Park. Two different subway stations connected you to everything are only a few steps away. David Letterman (and the Ed Sullivan Theater) is next door. Our room looked over Broadway. What a view of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! And the Deli across the street (Cafe 54) was awesome. The General Manager was always in the lobby ready to assist (and he genuinely cared about us as guests in his hotel). Check with the staff about any connectivity issues with the Wireless Internet before purchasing the agreement. The Wanderport Internet Service, which the hotel contracts out, was horrendous. All I can say is our family vacation to NYC was great due in no small part to a great hotel. We will stay there whenever we travel to the Big Apple in the future.

The location was great only a few blocks from Times Square. I would stay here again! The staff was very friendly and the doorman was very helpful with directions and info. The room was a little small, but it is NYC. I was very happy with my overall experience.

We just returned from a trip which included 4 nights at this hotel. We booked 2 rooms since we had 6 people in our party. As mentioned previously, the key is to request a room with 2 beds. Both rooms were large enough for 3 including ample space for luggage. The bathroom was spacious. A call to the from desk took care of several minor problems quickly. The locations couldn't be better and the price can't be beat. We had a shuttle problem on departure day and the bellman quickly and efficiently took care of finding alternative transportation and we were on our way. We felt well taken care of with clean rooms, efficient personnel and friendly staff. The only complaint I had was the view (or lack of one)but we weren't in our room much anyway. We would definetly stay here again.

This review is written as a warning to anyone who might consider staying at this hotel, or suing them. I had the misfortune of being at this hotel when it caught fire. The building filled with thick, black, choking smoke and I am suffering from breathing problems as a result. The hotel staff �abandoned ship� leaving all guests to fend for themselves. Fire escapes were filled with choking smoke and two of the three were blocked, forcing guests into a third floor hall that was filled with smoke. It could easily have turned tragic. The next morning, the hotel manager, Mark Wellings, had offered to comp me for all the nights, but then reneged and later surreptitiously billed my credit card for over $700 after I checked out. Mark Wellings is a liar and a weasel. To make matters worse, George Dfouni, COO of Amsterdam Hospitaltiy defended the lying and weasely behavior as being a matter of policy and steadfastly refused to make good on the agreement, just so he could soak a couple of extra nights of income out of me after nearly killing me. The Internet is filled with extraordinary discontent for this hotel. Google wisely before staying here!

the only problem I had was that the lights were too dim in the rooms, but other than that, it was a cute boutique hotel. The staff was very pleasant, rooms were cleaned on time, and it was close to everything I wanted to go to. I would recommend this hotel to anyone coming to NYC.....
