Comfort, Elegance, and Great Location
We stayed here for 6 nights and although I am generally not a "big hotel" person, I loved it. We stayed in a regular king room on the 7th floor that was attached to a beautiful 4 times as large suite room (compliments of my mother-in-law's business with the Hyatt). The rooms (and all the rooms on this side of the hotel) have a lovely view of the Harbor, accented by big windows as well the ability to partially open them.
The bed was supremely comfortable, with high thread count sheets, a down featherbed, and a down comforter. The room was average sized, extremely clean, with a luxurious bathroom (lighted make up mirror, upscale toiletreis), sizeable closet. The self parking garage is attached to the hotel and easy to maneuver in and out of (and we had rented a Jeep, not the smallest car possible). We were also on a concierge level, which meant that we could partake of free drinks, breakfast, and happy hour snacks every day if we desired. The breakfast was particularly good, with tons of fresh fruit, including pineapple, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and melons, along with fresh-baked muffins and other pastries, yogurt, granola, cereals, and platters of gourmet cheeses. My favorite breakfast item was a platter of garden-fresh, delicious sliced tomatoes, which I topped with lox, capers, and diced onion. The bagels were horrible and I didn't try the various breads available for toasting, but the bread looked okay. My 6 year old enjoyed rice crispies and nutrigrain cereal bars, which we pocketed for snacks on the go. The happy hour snacks were the typical tortilla chips, cheese and crackers, and not-so-fresh rolls. I was happy eating there every morning for breakfast, but we only went once to happy hour.
The hotel is structurally beautiful and it has a large pool and hot tub on the 4th floor overlooking the harbor. The pool was nice, but it was overrun with teenagers in the late afternoon who slung water balls around (provided ironically by the hotel, who listed "no ball playing" as one of the posted pool rules). We were there over labor day weekend and the hotel was crowded, but it was never noisy-- the soundproofing around rooms and between floors in excellent. We never heard noise outside our rooms. The fitness center has many upscale machines and over looks the pool, and despite other reviews, there is no charge and it is available 24 hours/day. The spa is also beautiful and for $10, you can swim in their outdoor, all-adult pool. I tried to make a spontaneous facial appt there but they were all booked up.
The location was exceptional. If you walked out the back door, you are in Seapport Village, which is a little touristy but it still has some great shops (a combination bookstore/coffee & desert cafe) and restaurants (try Buster's for exceptional hawaiian-inspired food and drinks-- like macademia encrusted chicken and with a children's menu for the kids (my picky 6 year old ate an adult-size portion of pasta with butter & cheese). If you walk across the street, you can catch the Trolley and go pretty much anywhere in the city-I took a 30 minute ride to the Northeast section of the city and it was fast and comfortable. If you walk 15 minutes, you are in the heart of the Gaslamp, and we ate at a delicious Persian restaurant, a good Indian restaurant, and a very good Chinese restaurant. All the restaurants in the Gaslamp have ambiance and style.
I really can't evaluate the value of this hotel-- I don't think that my opinion of it was swayed by the fact that our room was a comp. The rack rate is fair for Southern CA and the hotel's location and class. It is a very good choice for families, and a very good choice for anyone who enjoys luxurious bedding and comfortable beds, a great location, and more upscale amenities.
