Overrated; Not a Four Star Hotel
First, the hotel is overpriced. We paid only AUD $135 a night, and this was too much. I found this "hot deals" rate on their website, and despite reading previous bad reviews for the hotel, I decided to book anyway because it was one of only a few hotels in the Blue Mountains that I could book online. If I could do it again, I would wait and book one of the motels in Katoomba, which from the outside looked like they would be nicer than the Hydro Majestic, and would be much cheaper.
Second, the hotel is on a major highway, so expect major road noise. Since we booked the basic room, we were facing the highway, with loud trucks going by late into the night. The windows are old and have no insulation. Luckily, I packed a pair of ear-plugs, and I put them to good use.
Third, the interior of our room was old and dated, just like the hotel. The furnishings were ragged and worn, although they appeared clean. The furniture and bedspread were ugly and looked like they were purchased at a thrift store. The toilet in the bathroom ran. I don't agree with others about the room size. It was not all that small, but rather average.
Last, the worst part of the experience was the bed. Our "king" bed was actually two twins pushed together. One half of the bed was lumpy and extremely uncomfortable.
I stayed in Australia for three weeks at nine different hotels. The Hydro Majestic was the worst of them, and it is one of only two places that I wouldn't stay at again.
