A very classy experience
We loved this place, especially the stone inner courtyard and beautiful staircase. It's in a quiet, dignified neighborhood near the High Holborn tube stop. There's a Pret a Manger quite nearby (fast food that puts America's to shame), as well as a Boots pharmacy and a grocery store. You can walk to the British Museum and to one of my favorite London food haunts: Wagamama, a "Japanese noodle bar" which is totally addictive.
It's hard to comment on the value because we stayed for free with Hilton points. I can't even remember what the going rate was when we went.
Our only complaint is that as we sat in the lounge area enjoying our complimentary breakfast the day we checked out, a self-important hotel management-type employee came over and asked (with just a hint of condescending superiority) if we were actually guests at the hotel. Rather than say to her what I really wanted to ("I'm a Diamond Level VIP, you cow, so shab off!"), I demurely said yes, we had just checked out. I guess our jeans and backpacks made her think we were scroungy parasites, but they were trim little daypacks (not giant steel-framed, mountain-crossing affairs), and we were well-groomed and clean-cut.
Sadly, this is what I remember most about our visit. She really made us feel like scrubby ne'er-do-wells who didn't belong in such a fancy place.
Still, a nice place for a business traveller, or a couple who treasure quiet as much as we do. Probably not the best family place.
