Olcott is no longer a hotel.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/19/10
Called and they said they became condominiums several years ago. Too bad as it was a terrific location and nice accomodations for the city.

Unforgettable days
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/4/08
I stayed in this hotel for 3 days in mid summer more than a decade ago. While I was checking in at the front, Martin Balsam(!) walked down to the front to check his mails. After filling in the forms, I asked the staff that the guy was really that famous actor. He said Yes and told me that he was a resident at this hotel The other thing I remember in this hotel is that the door lock was faulty. At that time the hotel requested partial advance payment with personal cheque. The room and the facilities were aged but well maintained. Luckily enough, I din't see roaches at all.

Things Must Have Changed!!!
By HopiRaven, 4/23/08
Wow, I am reading these other reviews and am tempted to give The Olcott another try! When I stayed there (for several weeks),it was MANY years ago. The location was great, the room was great. The thousand cockroaches in our room thought so too! My memories of The Olcott are tainted by BUG INFESTATION, and I would love to think that has changed. Has anyone else have problems like this????

Favourite hotel in NY
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/11/07
I was enchanted with the Olcott location. It made feel at home, not at a hotel. We have been with two teenagers and enjoyed cooking breakfast ourselves. Not a noisy place, comfortable, enchanted neighbourhood, excellent location!

The ideal place to stay in NYC
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/31/07
Whilst I agree with the previous comment about 'faded splendour', we found the Olcott just wonderful. The rooms were spacious with plenty of room in the closetand the location is perfect (bang next to the Dakota Building. However, the best thing for a long stay (I was there for over 2 months) was the staff: a really delightful, friendly and helpful bunch. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Loved the bathtub and the kitchen
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/5/07
I have stayed at the Hotel a number of times and even though I stayed at other placesI have kept this one at the top ofmy list. The rooms were huge, beds comfortable and the bathtub was so large and deep - heaven. It was reminiscent of older hotels. I am a chef and I visit the food emporiums and bring back take out portions of their food and I disect them in the kitchen and duplicate them for my kitchen. Even though you don't accept credit cards I was not inconvenienced but that was no inconvenience. Loved it.

Brilliant!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/14/05
Rather than stay in a cookie-cutter shoebox while in NYC, I went to the Olcott on the recommendation of friends, and am glad I did. The first impression that sprang to mind when seeing the hallways and lobby was 'decayed splendor', but this was quite some time ago, and I understand they have renovated since: certainly, the room was modern, very spacious, and clean. As regards location, it's brilliant for Central Park, and is within very easy walking distance of a subway stop; local amenities include restaurants and a deli for breakfast if you don't fancy the hotel's own fare. All in all, the Olcott offers brilliant value: it's a lovely hotel, conveniently situated, at a frankly astoundingly low price. Recommended wholeheartedly.
