Tryp Peninsula Varadero, Varadero

I stayed at the Hotel Mar Del Sur, a 2 star hotel with drinks and all meals included. The rooms are ok, Television in the room with about 30 channels including CBC and American movie channels, the linen and towels are changed everyday, the food was not great but ok like lots of roast pork and chicken with salad and fruit. The beach just down the road was amazing, I walked a good 2 hours and didn't see half of it. The place is safer to walk around then my City of Montreal, people are nice and friendly, hardly any beggars. For $1500.00 for 2 weeks, such a deal. I took a 2 day side trip to Havana that included a nice coach bus with toilet, walk through old Havana, go to top floor of hotel that Ernest Hemmingway stayed at and had a mohito for a $1.50 and enjoyed the city from there, went to a cigar factory, all meals were included, stayed the night at a 4 star hotel " The Panorama Hotel" went to the Tropicana, the next day we drove to the country side to visit Pinar Del Rio, spent some time on a tobacco farm, visited some caves and a flea market, all this for $200.00, had the best time of the trip. I will go back too Cuba next year and spend more time in Havana.

It is no good going to Cuba and expecting 5* in everything. Most are government employed - if you are nice to them they are great to you. The food was acceptable (you have to remember their resources are not the same as other places), some brilliant, some poor. The individual restaurants mxd - Italian superb, caribean newly opened some brilliant some awful. Forget the pizzas. Room was good but not a typical 5* grounds immaculate. Seemed to me the staff went out of their way to help you but poor management. They didn't seem to care at all. Don't be put off though, I think this is better than many hotels and the visit to Havanna and Cuba is well worth the slight drop in standards generally.

the rsort landscaping is beatiful, the staff attentif, rooms good, fridge not stocked as advertised, pool was closed after the 2nd day of our 7 day trip, managements attitude was too bad, you can use the kiddie pool. the bugs were biting every one the food was below par and not hot, our first trip to Cuba was not good.

the hotel was lovely the rooms were just like the pictures on the web sight. The food was below average,the service was disorganised the staff were great but they had no direction from management. If the coffee machine ran out which it did every meal time no-one knew whose job it was to fill it. It was the same with other food items if they ran low.The food was mixed we were not impressed but other guestseat anything.The A-la-carte was good but you could only book twice each week.The fridge in the room were not stocked for two or more guests only one of each drink was in and then some days there was none put in,the maids were very nice but our floor was never washed while we were there for two weeks. There is water round the main hotel which would have looked good with fish and plants in but as it was it was a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Everyone was bitten and scratching, the mosquitoes were in the rooms and the main hotel so take plenty proctection. The entertainment on a night was basic ,not one came round the pool during the day to organise any activities.

My husband and i took our first trip together to the TRYP! we were there the last two weeks of Dec./07 thank god i booked our hotel before i had read the comments othes had written. we LOVED it soo much that we will go back every chance we get. since leaving cuba we have travelled to mexico & jamaica we didn't like either cuba is still the best. If you want to experience a time warp go to cuba it is incrediable all the cars are from the early 1900s to the late 50s, horse draw and oxen drawn carriages, bikes no fast food cheap fresh sea food on the boat excursions, alcart dinning was great so was the buffet, they try to accomadate all walks of life and do a good job at it. they LOVE canadians we were treated great the staff at the TRYP we great anything we wanted just ask, try to learn general spanish phrases and you should be ok. we took alot of excursions cayo blanco was great, the russian helicopter trip to trinidad was an experience it was not offered through transat but one of the other agancies help us to get it a little expensive but worth every penny. swimming with the dolphins great. all of the staff are well educated and most speak a few languages they may greet you for dinner at 5 and be on stage for 9 they are some of the hardest working people i have ever seen. travelledwith our 6month old son with no problems with illness food or water for any of us. I was at first nervious about leaving our son at the baby club they took such good care of him for us;Ina was one nanny she still emails me and calls once in a while, if any one sees her there trust me in saying she is great!!!! Notes on what to bring... if you plan on taking the jeep safari excursion take along things for the kids such as candy, pencils, hair things for girls, travel toothbrushes, toothpaste pretty much anything from the dollar store for a couple of bucks you can make people really happy. the maids and cleaning staff love that stuff to they all have kids maybe that is why we were treated so well i dont really know but hey its better then being upset. we travelled in the winter from sask. so the summer clothes and stuff we took would no longer fit our baby when we got back so i gave everthing to Ina she was so greatful the only thing is if you want to give somthing to someone in spacific you must carry it out of the gates for them the staff gets searched when the leave work and it could get them in trouble so i paid for her cab home with all the bags. I could go on for ever but i won't just remember this country has had to survive without the conviences of alot of modern things we take for granted and i feel some of the people that write alot of the mean comments go in with an expectation of being on a holiday in a country that has had it easy they havent they are survivours and friendly . I hope my honesty helps ithers to have as great of a stay as we had! enjoy we will again and again and again.......

THis was a wonderful place. it was very large and had lots of things to do. I thought that the food and restaurants were great. the beach was HUGE!!! i had a great time on the beach. A total bonus was that there are no mosquitoes there but i had a room on the main floor of the building and sometimes bugs would come under. the place was great but the bath tubs were too small and werent very clean. The service was amzing!! I went there 4 years ago (went it just opened) and it was great. but some people have said that it has gotten worse. from the other reviews i've heard, it must've become much worse beccause i had a great time. On the last day i was there, i was terribly sick with Diarrhea and felt like i had to vomit everytime i left the washroom. it was awful. Im not sure what is was from because the rest of my family was fine. but i read other comments and people say the same thing happened to them because of the food. i thought the food was great though. it might have just been sun-stroke and drinking too much salt water by accident. WHAT TO BRING IF YOU GO HERE!!!: -sunglasses -water,water,water -hats!!! -sunscreen!! - konk (to keep bugs away) - shoes to walk around in because this place is huge!! - and a large fork because this place has sooo many restaurants. - hot tubs werent clean though. sorta gross. THIS PLACE WASS SOOO MUCH FUN WITH SO MUCH TO DO!! ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS!! (LIKE ME) haha

My wife and got back from Tryp Peninsula in Varadero last week. In general, we enjoyed our 'tryp'. Like most people, we greatly enjoyed our 'a la carte' at the Italian restaurant. Everything was very fresh and tasty; the service was very courteous and professional. We noticed that many people got sick. We are suspecting the food buffet and perhaps the drinks. We found that some things were not quite clean such as forks and knives as well as glasses from the bar. Just like many people that we've met over there, my wife and I were down and out for a whole day with a fever and quite sick (mostly diharea and nauseated). We didn't make it to our 'a la carte' that evening. I must say that we were disappointed in the quality of the drinks at this resort. It seemed (and this was confirmed by many people at the resort) that most drinks tasted pretty much the same. We also found that the rhum must be diluted. The bartenders pour and pour but there is very litle kick. Being on a tropical island, we expected fresh fruits and fresh juice in the drinks. We mostly got artificial flavors. However, the excursion on Cayo Blanco island was GREAT! The Pina Colidas there were out of this world with real juices!!! When it comes to beaches and the rooms, it was SUPER! Nothing to complain about. I would say that my biggest disapointment was the lack of clear information about charges. We have to realize that we are in a foreign country and things are different. However, we were told that we would be charged 2.10 pesos for every minute to Canada. When we checked out, the lady gave us the total amount owed. This amount was simply ridiculous (over 100.00$). When we asked to see the minutes, she could not give it to us saying she only had the total in pesos. I was in awe and all she could say was that I had to pay it in full. Other people had the same experience knowing that there was no possible way that the amount could add up so quickly at 2.10 a minute. For the mini bar in the room, one day we'd get 2 beers and 2 pop, while other days only 1 beer ??? All in all, we recommend this resort but we think that they need to improve a few things before we go back. Thank you!

The experience was beyond expectancy! We are glad that we did not pay attention to some of the food reviews, because we loved it (specially the “a la cart” restaurants. Grounds are super clean with great mature palm trees and other plants/vegetation. Room very spacious and super clean everyday including beds and bathroom. Beach is one of the best in Varadero. Very good swimming pool also. The musicians were of very good level, with great entertaining every night. We did not found one single person that did not understand ingles (some better than others, of course.) Only one disappointment: poor internet services.
