Matachica Beach Resort, San Pedro

Mata Chica Beach Resort is an intimate beach front resort about 5 miles north of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in Belize. The resort has undergone extensive renovations in the last year, and the staff and new owners have spent considerable effort in making their guests feel pampered and special. There are new sail boats, sea kayaks and windsurfers, as well as new life vests and snorkle equipment. The beach is pristine, and the reef is a few hundred yards off the beach. Mambo restaurant serves local and international cuisine and is probably the best restaurant on the island. The Jade spa offers 60 and 90 minutes messages and other treatments that are as good as any I have ever had. I stayed there with my two sons in January and we went scuba diving with the Belize Academy of Diving who were terrific. There are no telephones or televisions in the rooms, so those expecting a Cancun vacation will be disapointed. Stay at Mata Chica to relax, recover and renew. What a perfect place to stay!

Mata Chica was a dream come true! It is out of the way, charming and elegant in a European way. The staff really make the place, from the arrival via their boat from town to the wait staff. They really go out of their way to make your trip special and personal. (By the way, the town of San Pedro is adorable, charming and really Belizean. It's the anti-Cancun) The resort only holds about 36 guests so you are treated with personal attention. I recommend this for a romantic trip or even a place to get married!! and for divers looking for something luxurious and different, but I'd go back with a group of friends and rent one of the villas with 2 or 3 bedrooms and living room. They have sea kayaks, sailboats, windsurfers and bikes for the guests so you can have a pretty active vacation if you want. Or you can hang out in a hammock and enjoy the sea breeze. Great place!
