BAD SERVICE IN RESTAURANT! REALLY BAD!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/25/09
My family and I were in Baker to go to Sumpter Days on May 23, 2009. That evening we decided to have a nice dinner at the Geiser Grand Hotel... What a horrible mistake...the service was extremely terrible, the waitress was very slow and inattentive, disappearing for long periods of time before we would see her again. After we had been there nearly an hour, still with no food, we very nicely told the manager of the restaurant about the poor service and she immediately coped an attitude, telling us that since we didn't have a reservation she had already told us it would be hard to get a table, we informed her that she'd told us we could have a table in 30 to 40 minutes and we told her we would wait. When the food finally got there, one of my son's onion rings had a big hair in it! The waitress was apologetic but again when the manager finally came over she said, "So what's YOUR story." She the began arguing with us about the service and saying we hadn't been there as long as we said we had. She did finally say maybe she could adjust the bill and we said the whole meal should be comped and I suggested we leave. We got up and left with everyone's meal uneaten. I have never in my life had such a bad experience at a restaurant. The food is barely adequate ( the two bites that I took!) and the prices are extremely high, i.e. a small bowl of pasta $23.00! So if you are traveling and looking for a nice place to have dinner pass this place by, keep on going to Ontario, there are great places to eat there.

one of the worst hotel experiences you could have
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/23/09
Bring your own mattress, we stayed in the luxury parlor suite with reservations for 4 adults. One of the beds was a hide a bed with springs sticking up, the staff was totally unresponsive. Baker is a great little town but you would be smart to find other accomadations

Worst Service Ever - Textbook case of what not to do
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/19/07
This is by far the worst service experience I have ever had in my life. When talking with local merchants, they were surprised that I made it out with my credit card in tact. We arrived during the Cattlemen's convention. The hotel failed to notify us this convention would be going on right outside our rooms (they said we should have got a call but they forgot). The convention would run until 10pm every night, and you could not make any reservations at the restaurant for Friday evening and all of Saturday. We indicated we were not happy with the failure to get a phone call and unavailability of the restaurant, and asked to speak to the hotel manager. The hotel manager REFUSED to come out and talk to us face to face, and indicated through the front desk clerk on the phone "We do not feel we have to make any amends." Not even a very simple "I apologize." We spoke with several other local merchants who indicated that such poor service is par for this hotel. This hotel also has a common practice of overbooking and if you arrive (with a reservation) and they are full, too bad, so sad. They also have a 3 day cancellation policy. So, if you arrive, and they are overbooked, your card will not be refunded because you did not call with 3 day notice. This is criminal. Call your visa card issuer and dispute the charge for "services not rendered/received." Do yourself a favor - go stay at the Best Western just off the freeway, who has more comfortable rooms, much friendlier (and competent) staff, and a nicer restaurant (not to mention a better price). Merchants like this need to understand that service is what makes your business, not being afraid of the customer.

We will be back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/12/07
Visiting the Geiser Grand was a very special treat. Lots of beauty; great service. The beds weren't that comfortable but all else made up for that. All 3 in the group saw or experienced ghost activity. We can't wait to go back! A truely wonderful experience.

Restaurant Employees
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/30/07
I visit Baker City on occasion and have a few friends there. I often go to the Geiser for dinner and drinks but will no longer do this. On my last two visits I, along with my fellow diners, had to listen to a waitress be-rate her ex-boyfriend to many of the diners she waited on. All of which she apparently already knew. She was loud, unprofessional and incredibly inappropriate. She went into detail about her personal life and the details of her relationship. All of her comments were audible to other diners. I have spoken with other customers who have overheard this waitress do the same thing over the past months. For an upscale restaurant, it is a shame that a woman such as this is employeed as someone representing the resataurant or Baker City.

Overrated
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/17/07
We saw the Geiser Grand on TV one night and thought the place sounded fabulous. When I called to make reservations we were told a "parlor" room could be had for a little more money and it had a nicer view than most the other rooms. Our "view" was the rear parking lot and a partial view of a nearby hill. There was not a four poster bed and the room was not full of antiques. There was a hole in the ceiling where a fan used to be. The towels in the bathroom were frayed and needed to be replaced and it just didn't have a clean feeling. We had been told by the reservation desk that they did not have a pool but that you could go swimming at the nearby YMCA upon presenting your door key. This was not so but we were told there was a place to swim across the freeway by the truck stop....no thanks. The food was very good in the dining room and the service was good. At check out we were not asked "How was everything?" Do they care? We have had a lot more for a lot less.

Wont ever go back
By Monell Knight, 07/09/07
Went to dinner at the resturant-the Hotel is beautiful but the food was terrible. The rice was hard and crunchy and the "great wine" was warm. The excuse-"oh the rice has been sitting and it hardens on the sides"

By Candra, 04/22/07
Oh my gosh! What a great time! The rooms, the food and the staff were all great! The town is so beautiful, I just can't get enough! Very friendly people who welcome you in with open arms. Lot's to do and see. I even bought a car while I was there, thanks Baker Garage! I am coming back to Baker every year now!

Eat there look at the place and leave.
By Vincecp, 01/03/07
On November 11, 2006 I used an on-line reservations systems to book the Cupola room at the Geiser Grand Hotel in Baker City Oregon. Through this system I was required to pay in advance for this most expensive room in the hotel. I did so happily planning a wonderful New Years Eve stay to honor our 7th year together. We arrived at the hotel at approximately 3 PM Idaho time on 12/31/06. We had driven two hours from Idaho and did not consider the time change which made it only 2 PM in Baker City, Oregon. When we walked up to the desk we were met by a woman who informed us in a very terse tone that we were early and would have to come back to check in. We were not asked our names nor asked if we would like to store our luggage. We left and toured the city for an hour. When we returned there were approximately 20 people milling around waiting for rooms to become available. As we all waited we were told the rooms were undergoing final review before being released and that our names would be called as rooms were released. And so we all waited . . . Approximately 20 minutes passed and true to their word the desk personnel began calling names of people waiting at the desk. My husband has taught self-defense for 20 years at our local YMCA and he and I were dismayed as we clearly heard each name and saw the directions given to help the guest find the room. We both thought this was horrible customer service as well as a security risk that all guests should be concerned about. Our disappointment multiplied as we overheard some guests book meal reservations for a specific time that evening and realized that someone could follow them to their room and know what time they would be leaving for dinner making them easy targets. Ours was the last name called and we were then told that the Cupola room which we had reserved and paid for in advance as a special treat on our anniversary was not available. This is the most expensive room in the hotel and quite different from any other as it sits on the top of the hotel overlooking the town. We were told we could instead have a suite which had an adjoining living room. We were not offered any discount on our prepaid price. We looked at the room and found it to be sub-standard to the Cupola room we had requested and asked for a refund. We were told the refund would have to be issued from the Coroporate office. I found this odd and requested a letter to back up the fact that we had arrived and determined the other room to be inadequate. The Corporate office subsequently has refused to offer us a refund.
