This place claims to be a Protea Hotel. However, it is far below the standard of service we have come to expect from Protea properties.
A terrible odor of mold permeates the hallway and the room we occupied. The carpet is wet. The air conditioner is not effective. The toilet seat is broken.
Fans were in use in a number of unoccupied rooms, perhaps in an attempt to dry the carpets. We should have asked for a fan in our room but didn't think of it until the next morning
The hotel could fill an extremely useful function if the numerous problems could be addressed.
One good aspect of our stay-we left our luggage in the room while we left for breakfast. When we checked the door we noted it would not lock. A woman from the front desk came and after several tries was able to secure the door. Our luggage was still there when we returned.
This so called hotel is a cluster of unfriendly rooms. Only passengers transiting through South Africa without a visa for this country are forced to stay in this hotel.
As a business traveller I could not use my laptop in this hotel because the plug points are all "M" type electric socket (used only in Soutb Africa) and the usual adapter sets do not fit into the M type.
You do not get any food or drinking water or any help in this hotel. They provide "free of cost" two packets of pouches containing sugar, milk and tea and coffee along with an electric kettle. Use bathroom tap water to make tea/coffee.
The reception people were friendly. Room was very expensive for the what is there to offer, but convenient location for travelers in transit will aloud this to go on.
When I go to Johannesburg again, and that will be in a couple of weeks, I will probably try to find a better value for money.
I rested for 4 hours and paid around U$85. That is expensive, but as I wrote before - convenient.
Only reason to stay there is if you do not have any other choice but to overnight in JNB. Place is dirty, smelly, had to change 3 rooms to get a "clean" room. Open leaking pipes in bathroom. And its about $150/night

I have stayed at this hotel a few times in the last 3 years and have found the staff very helpful, the room was clean albeit a smell of oldness. The accomodation is ok, if I needed a 5-star hotel I'll go find one in town. However, Protea's location within the airport premises is a big plus for travellers like me who need to spend only a few hours in transit...and there is a restaurant on the mezzanine too The only negative thing about the place is the high rate charged, but then this is a commercial entrerprise not YMCA!
I plan to continue to uses its facilities.
To the front desk staff, I say keep smiling.
The only positive impression is the reception area with friendly staff. I got a room with a bath and shower. However, there was no showerhead, just a pipe sticking out of the wall. I was then moved to another room which reeked of cigarettes. The bathroom had a bath with attached shower. However, I had to hold the shower cord in my hand as the rod was broken. The bath was cracked and the floor just looked dirty. The towels had more holes than material. The sheets on the bed had tears and blotches. Could they not have been washed after the last occupants? For a hotel group that prides itself on quality, this hotel is seriously lacking. The problem is I always have to stay over one night on my connecting flights, but it won't be at this hotel...especially not when they charge nearly R400 for 12 hours. I've stayed in much better hotels in Johannesburg, for less than half what Protea Transit charges and got thrice the quality.
