Never, ever again
It started out bad when we tried to check in. Our room wasn't ready but the only clerk on duty said he would check on it for us. He promptly forgot about us and went about helping other people who were lined up at the desk. He was apparently the only person working there and as we found out later, that was pretty much the norm, only one person on duty at a time. After an hour of waiting I asked him again if our room was ready, he looked completely confused as he had completely forgotten about us. He did go to our room then and came back and said it was ready. When we got to the room the cleaning staff was just arriving and they hastily cleaned up the room, barely. The room was still pretty dirty, the bed was old, small, lumpy and sagged in the middle. It needed replacing years ago. Once, when the toilet stopped up we notified the front desk and they said they would take care of it immediately. We left for a day of sight-seeing and when we returned the toilet was still blocked. I went to the front desk and was handed a plunger. I unstopped the toilet myself. I didn't remember if their web-site mentioned that the rooms were air-conditioned or not but was nearly certain I had checked that as it is very important for my wife and I. The room was not air-conditioned and as we had a second floor room it was stifling hot at night. We were there in June so the sun didn't set and it was light pretty much all night. We had to close the drapes which completely stopped any airflow. There was a fan in the room. The continental breakfast was OK but the poor, lone desk clerk had to prepare that in the morning as well as checking in any guests, taking care of regular business and getting any guests to or from the airport. The hotel is located very close to the airport, which was convenient for our early flight out. Thankfully, all we used the room for was to sleep at night and we were gone nearly all day, everyday. It seemed to me that most guests were using this hotel as a one night stop before they caught a cruise, train or flight out to another destination in Alaska. On the first night we arrived, I accidentally dropped a small piece of chocolate in the hall-way by our room. It NEVER moved and was still in the same place I dropped it when we left. I imagine it's still there. One guest told us that the hotel had recently changed hands. It needs to change hands again. This could be a 'passable' hotel with a lot of renovations, i.e. new beds, new carpet, etc. Right now, I wouldn't stay there again if they paid me. It was greatly overpriced for the quality we received. The ONLY reason we stayed is that it was the busy season and we really couldn't find anything else. I would have paid double or triple for another room that was of even marginal quality better than the Long House Hotel. Do yourself a favor, don't stay here. I based our stay on reviews found here on Expedia. I hope this gives the next person ample warning. By the way, I am not a hotel snob. A clean, decent, well kept hotel and fairly competent staff is all I ask for. This hotel had none of that.
