Sherburne Inn, Nantucket

The inn is clean and has adequate public areas. The rooms are small but fairly well appointed. We appreciated the free wireless internet, beach chairs and towels. On the other hand, many things are too measured and lacking any warmth or personality whatever. The breakfast is all store bought and served on a strict schedule. You snooze, you lose - literally! Same with afternoon sherry and cookies, which come out precisely at 5:01 and are taken up at 6 on the dot. Finally, while they use Aveda toiletries, don't expect for there to be an extra bottle of shampoo or conditioner waiting for you. And you'll use the same soap bar for the length of your stay, no matter how long. All it would take to bring this place up to speed would be ownership that ran it less like bean counters and more like true innkeepers.

We stayed in room #7, admitted, the brochure states it's a small room, but we had no idea how small. The bathroom is indeed small, with no bath, a tiny tiny shower with no place to go but stand and get drenched, a small sink that has no place to put anything on, so we have to use the toilet with the seat down. The double bed is pushed against one wall so whoever sleeps that side has to get out by sliding down so as not to disturb their partner. The closet is small, take as little as possible or clothes will just not fit. Host and hostess are pleasant people, but being pleasant doesn't make up for the inconveniences. We booked for 3 nights, but got there Friday and left Saturday morning.
