Could do better!

My wife and I just spent 10 days at the StGeorge. We were unlucky because our travel agent booked us into a room at the back of the hotel - ON NO ACCOUNT MUST YOU DO THIS! The reason this is a problem is that hotel is built into a steep hillside and the view from all the rooms at the back is of a steeply wooded slope with a public footpath running across it from which people can see into the rooms. So not only is it dark to start with (no matter how sunny the day) you have to have the curtains slightly drawn for privacy. Our room was dingy, the bed was in a poor state, the bathroom fittings were worn and the extractor fan didn't work at all (no windows in the bathroom so much use of air freshner!) The bedroom and bathroom were mainly lit by flourescent lighting. All in all this was not a room that anyone would choose to spend much time in, fortunately as the weather was good - we didn't!
So with regard to accomodation, hopefully the nice big rooms at the front of the hotel really are 4 star - ours was just 2 star at best. But if you do spring for the front of the hotel be sure you like the sound of running water as a fast running stream hurtles past the hotel and there is a small waterfall bang outside the front door. Some people might find the noise soothing..... others may not.
The food was on the whole good (although the breakfast fare never really changes) but the evening meal provides tiny portions which was a problem if you spent all day walking up and down mountain sides. If you stay at this hotel and intend being moderately active, bring some energy bars for after your evening meal.
The dining room is fine and the staff are as always very kind and attentive but some of the tables force you to sit cheek by jowl with your neighbours and a week of being next to the same people can be very tiring. The food is always highly commended but is actually over-rated. Just a few minutes walk down the hill is the absolutely excellent Steinerwirt restaurant - classic Austrian food and a great atmosphere, plenty of locals, and the menu is very reasonably priced. Well worth the effort if only for few nights. Oh, and if you are of a sensitive disposition avoid the friday night meal in the hotel restaurant; the accordion player is well meaning but it really is an instrument for the big outdoors ....
