Best hotel in Colombia! Irotama Class 101
I was 2 yrs old the 1st time I visited this hotel. 26 years ago it was a small simple hotel, but I have seen it grow as big as it is today. Most of the employees even remember me by name over the years. My family came for vacations at least every 2 yrs. I didn't come from 2001 til 2008, and returned to marvel at a hotel that is still growing and I couldn't be as happy as I was now visiting with my own family. People who don't know the hotel, do not know what room to choose or which are the best places to stay at in this hotel. First the Hotel has 1 mile of beach side, which tells you how long the hotel is and how much it has grown over time. I love to walk from one side to the other as if I had 1 mile of private beach. Sorry nothing better than this, not even any of the 3 different Ritz-Carlton's I had stayed at. I'm going to help you choose the best suites you could ever get. All the middle of the hotel is the old section (built over 26 years ago), any of these are for people who like the rustic feeling and the Bohios are the small cabanas that make you feel as if you were on an island under a Tiki hut. Great for those who want to experiment that feeling and believe me they are not bad accommodations, it's just not for those who want the comfort of a 5 star resort. The old apts (Irotama North) that are next to the small pool or oldest pool, (where I learned to swim), are really old & small. For a 3 to 4 star hotel style stay in the Irotama XXI building, built in 00-01 and they remodeled the building in 08. There are some suites that are hidden between the north section going to the south section of the resort that is my absolute favorite building because is secluded and I don't loose some of the new amenities that I like. Going to the south section, passing the tennis courts and through a bridge where you can see several of iguanas all day long. There is the new and improved and sophisticated Irotama del SOL. Brand new in 08. The hotel has an infinity pool and many balconies have their own Jacuzzi (in case you want more luxury) over looking the Atlantic ocean. For those overlooking the back you have a pretty picture of the Nevado del Ruiz. The apartments (exactly as I'm saying it APARTMENTS, because they are European style apartments), not a simple room and made of pretty granite on the outside. The resort offers you approx. 5 different restaurants to choose from and my favorite "La Barra Viva" (choose your own fish or lobster from a fish tank). People need to learn the Card system. You get a card depending on the package you asked for and keep it with you. It will give you 4 free drinks at Happy Hour (6pm till 8pm, it used to be unlimited when i was younger, sorry) or 4 amazing juices after breakfast (I'm talking fresh fruit and some you had never had before). Kids get 4 free ice cream popsicles, you name it. You also get your breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want something specially prepared, they discount the regular price of the dinner towards the price of the item your asking for. If you like peace come anytime except from June 15 to Aug. 15 and definitely not in Nov. 20 to Jan. 5 (the hottest time). Now the advantage of those days is that all the restaurants, the trips outside the hotel, the disco on the 3rd floor of the Convention Center and hundred of recreational activities for the whole family are open almost every day (Not during Low season). BEWARE: The Gym & the Spa are old. just don't use those but the mega pool next to the Convention center (where Presidents have met for dialogues and were I watched the Soccer World Cup of 94 in the big screen.) is out of this world gigantic with the most amazing Bar on top of the cascade. Use to been run by my old friend Salvador who retired from the Hotel after 30 years of service. If you don't like where you're staying just ask them to show you around the suites and apartments to get what you want. How do you think I got to stay in all and see them all, JUST ASK !
