It was beautiful...i want to go back so badddd...i encourage you to visit this hotel it's just off the hook!

I could imagine that this hotel was quite something in it's hey day, possibly in the early eighties. It is extremely unfortunate that the hotel sold part of the land and now a large apartment complex will be built next door. This will completely destroy the beautiful views currently enjoyed by guests. I found the staff here wonderful and in fact if it wasn't for the service, the smiles and the english speak ing staff, there is not much the hotel has to offer. It is around 30mins by car from the heart of Ipanema, and 40mins from Copacabana. This is when the traffic is not too bad. It is around 17BR by taxi to Ipanema. I suggest not to take the hotel cars as these are much more expensive, however more worth it if you are doing the tourist attractions. In addition do not charge this to your room as a hefty surcharge is placed, pay upfront in cash. The hotel does seem more geared towards convention guests and also many flight crews stay here. The surrounding beach is pleasant especially if you would like to stay away from the overcrowding on the tourist beaches. There is not much in the way of restaurants in the surrounding area. The hotel does have a two very good restaurants however the tourist prices can be expensive. The Fashion mall located almost directly behind the hotel has very limited stores, mainly overly priced fashion stores, the Italian restaurant does have a nice patio and is reasonable. This hotel is definitely more suited to the family who would like a resort style holiday, not the best for single or younger people where you would be better off closer to the action.

I have to write here, since I think this hotel was a total rip-off and I cannot recommend it to anyone. The service is very poor, the rooms are very simple (2 stars max) and they try to charge you for everything. For example: internet costs 37R$/day, copies 2R$/each and so on. They also have deals with certain taxi companies and drivers and their charges are about double of the real taxi prices in Rio.

While the views from the south rooms are spectacular, the hotel is focused on it's convention-type events and not-so-much their tourist demographic. When we could actually find a concierge, only one person gave us any useful information about sightseeing logistics or restaurants. It's out of town - but has a nice beach and is next to a proper shopping mall - so expect traffic going into Ipanema and Copacabana. Request a remodeled room and be aware that there is massive construction going on at the south side of the hotel - they start work early.

I've been in the Intercontinental several times (ten or more) and I allways come back when visiting Rio. The hotel is just in the way from Rio to Barra and close to both places (five to ten minutes by car) The hotel front is S�o Coronado beach the hotel back is the favela Rosinha (both very interesting places) The Fashion Mall, the most exclusive shopping mall in Rio, is just two minutes walking from the hotel. Service is very good, rooms are a bit old but comfortable.

Being in Rio to work isn't the best way to go, but to be in Rio at all is great. The Hotel staff were extremly friendly, and were quite used to people asking a lot of questions. The room was spacious, with a great view of the beach, and plenty of outlets that were 112, rather than the usual 220. It was a little of the major beaches (copa, and Ipanema), but a $6 cab ride will get you there. Food at the hotel was great, and the shops were a nicr thing to have on your way out to the beach!
