Great pool scene
We stayed here 6 days in March 2009. The hotel is split into two structures on opposite sides of Ashford Avenue. There is a covered walkway that crosses Ashford one floor up. The main part of the hotel (where most of the pools, check in, and restaurants are) is in the structure on the ocean side of Ashford. The structure on the Lagoon side has one restaurant, tennis courts, and one restaurant (Varitas).
We stayed on the lagoon side, which I believe is less expensive. Easy enough to get to the main hotel though, with the walkway you needn't even go outside.
The pool scene was very nice. Two nice sized pools at the main hotel, one was 6 foot deep all the way around, and the other seemed to be at most 3-4 feet. The shallower pool had a swim up bar. Prices are high, for example I remember beers being about $5 and mixed drinks $10. $11 for a hot dog, $15 for a hamburger, etc (as best I can remember). However, they didn't have any qualms about us bringing water and sandwiches purchased elsewhere (though I didn't attempt to bring in beer). You get free towels, which were nice and big.
The pools are right next to a beach, which is public. All beaches in PR are public, but at this one it's more obvious because it's very small and in a public area, so there's quite a few people in a small area. It faces other hotels across the small lagoon, and is next to a bridge with lots of traffic. If you're looking for a great beach scene, this isn't it. But it's ok.
The room was nice, but basic. The door to the bathroom was odd, how do I describe it? It's a sliding door, that when open is along the wall, and slides over in front of the entrance to the bathroom. It doesn't block sound whatsoever, so anything you do in the bathroom is audible in the room. Not a problem since I've been married for some time, but if you're in a newer relationship and are a little squeemish about things, it could be awkward.
We only stayed at one restaurant, Varitas, and it was our most forgetable meal of our vacation. It wasn't horrible, and the service was great, but the food was very average, and expensive. I recommend venturing out for your meals.
That brings up my biggest issue with the hotel, location. It's got a beatiful view of the beach, but is not all that near anything. It's on the end of a peninsula of sorts, so there's only two ways away from the hotel. Across a bridge, which is not pedestrian friendly and only accesses a highway anyway, and the other direction is, immediately, an abandoned hotel. The hotel seems unsalvagable based on it's condition, it's basically a concrete shell, about 10 stories high, with all doors/windows removed, and graffiti all over it. It looks like something you'd see in Beirut. There are just a few restaurants that would be in what I would consider to be walking distance. So, if you stay here, recommend having a car, especially noting cabs are somewhat expensive.
