Not worth the high cost -
Just got back last week. My wife, 2 year old, and I first stayed four days at The Palace in Cozumel and then the last four days at Dreams which we had read was the best thing since apple pie.
Somebody got it wrong. If I had to do it over again, I would have chosen one of the Palace resorts rather than Dreams.
Here is a quick summary:
Dreams:
wider assortment of food at breakfast/lunch buffet; view from the Tower on ocean side was very nice because of how close it was to the crashing sound of the waves; no hot tub; no hammock on balcony; no royalty treatment; low quality rooms;
Palace:
super A+++ royalty treatment from the time we arrived to the day we left; hot tub in the room, hammock on the balcony, very friendly service, everyone did what they could to make sure you enjoyed yourself...as if they were all getting paid more than at other hotels and knew they would lose their jobs if a hotel guest complained about them.
For those of you who want more detail:
We paid about $350/night at Dreams to stay in the tower. We got a 4 night stay via Costco to stay at Dreams which cost about $275/night. At the Palace I felt like I was a high roller in Vegas. At Dreams I was treated just like any other person.
We liked the Palace so much that we bought one of their deals which is similar to a timeshare.
Dreams:
- we got dropped off in out taxi at the front entrance, had to walk maybe 15 yards and search for the front desk/check-in area before we were actually and finally greeted by anyone. we were offered a cold hand towel to wash off our face.
- Wider assortment of food at the breakfast/lunch buffets.
- If you stay in the Tower like we did and get a room on the ocean side, your balcony has an excellent view of the ocean - but no hammock even though we paid more than $300/night. No hot tub (read on for Palace review)
- My major complaint is with the room quality. Maybe it was 2 steps up from Motel 6 - probably a stretch, but the paint was chipped in the ceiling corners, the bathroom looked very old, just not a sparkling palace that I was expecting for the $300+ spent per night.
- Dolphin area was nice and those with a balcony overlooking the dolphins had a great location except for the afternoon sun beaming into their sliding glass doors for 4 -6 hours.
The Palace:
- Wow! We stayed on the island Cozumel, and this was a Palace and we were treated like royalty. The taxi dropped us off at the front entrance, a Palace employee opened our taxi door, greeted us, took our bags, opened the hotel glass doors for us - at which time we another employee offered cold hand towels to cool off with, and no soon had that person left then another showed up offering us a nice fruit cocktail drink...my wife and I were just "wow!"...
- our room (cheaper than at Dreams) was amazing with a hot tub and a balcony with a hammock. Great view of the ocean, but not as close as at Dreams.
- the high class restaurants were about the same quality as at Dreams, the breakfast/lunch buffet was not as big...but the service was excellent. At Dreams, one breakfast my wife ordered juice which she didn't get, I later ordered coffee which I never got. The Palace meanwhile had excellent service. I remember at one lunch my wife dropped her fork and before she could bend over to pick it up the hostess - not the waiter or bussboy - the hostess had quickly walked over and picked it up. It seemed as everyone as the Palace always had a friendly smile and wanted to make sure you had a great time.
