Uneventful!
Uneventful.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at the American Club. Our first night away from our two children. We were expecting a resort feel, sprawling grounds, a stately sign in front, a long driveway leading up to the main building.
Instead you drive down Highland Drive and what you see leading up to the American Club are homes, a strip mall a high school football field,
the Kohler Design center, the factory to your left and then you pull into a parking lot on your right and theres the Club. We felt like we were on a college campus. The reason you wont find many photos of the outside is, it would be hard to not include the homes that surround the Hotel.
A standard room is just that, standard. The closet housed the TV and bar, so there was a wardrobe closet in the room which takes up too much room.
The widows are small with plantation blinds so not a lot of light gets in. The bathrooms were standard. There was no hairdryer in the bathroom and the only hint of a 5 star resort was the phone in the bathroom. The tub was standard In size but had Jacuzzi jets. The hallway ceilings are low I felt like I was on a cruise ship. The bed and comforter were great however.
We went to the Horse and Plow for lunch but it was full. Thats it full. No recommendation for another option. We walked over to Quiznos Subs in the The shops at Woodlake, its a strip mall. We did a little shopping. No stores of substance. The mall could have been anywhere. We felt removed from any resort feel.
We were really looking forward to using the Spa but found out we couldnt get in. There we no lockers. This was at one oclock on a Saturday. I remember when I booked my reservations three months in advance I asked if reservations were needed just to use the Spa and I was told no, reservations are not taken for general admittance but not to worry. Kohler uses the Spa as a big selling point, but keep in mind if you dont book a service there is no guarantee you will get in. We were willing to pay $25.00 each to use the facility, hearing so much about the pools and the 4th floor area with the fireplace, skylights and Jacuzzi etc... They said they would call us when there was an opening. We left our cell phone number so we didnt have to be close to our room. We also mentioned this to the concierge at the hotel that this had happened and they seemed very surprised like this has never happened before. But 2 different concierges didnt seem to do anything about it. The Spa called at 6pm. They called our room not our cell phone we were just lucky to be there. We had dinner reservations at 8 so going to the Spa that day didnt work out. We got in on Sunday for three hours before we had to leave so didnt enjoy it as much. We also had to do all the legwork, Sunday morning we called the concierge and asked if she could help us out. She transferred us to the Spa. The Spa again gave no guarantee but said we should be able to get in. A very nice Spa though, 5 stars.
The design center, was cool. The Winery Bar was great, very posh. The Immigrant Room had a more limited menu that what is on the website. The food was O.K. It was overpriced. The room felt dated not romantic at all. Service was good. We decided to finish the night with a drink at the Horse and Plow, there was a big crowd and it took a while to get a drink at the bar, we ended up leaving, it felt and looked like a standard restaurant void of any character. Breakfast in the Wisconsin Room was great.
If you like old hotels, staying close or within the building, drinking tea and eating to pass the time this may be the place for you.
