Win Some, Lose Some
To celebrate our Anniversary, my husband and I planned an extended weekend at the Mountaineer. We are an older couple (in our early 50's). We don't gamble much but like the casino atmosphere. About the casino: The "tightness" of the machines as reported in many reviews, is certainly accurate. While I could play penny slots for an hour or so with a twenty (and believe me, that was it), the quarter machines could suck down a twenty in 5 minutes or less with no hits. Table games apparently are a different story, but neither of us would invest that cash. No free drinks except for pop. Would suggest that a couple free drinks may keep people at the machines. About the More Players Club: Nice personnel to sign you up, nice promotions for the weekend we were there ("Staycaction"). The points are nice too when you can add them to your dining bill. A word of caution, do not expect them to follow the ads you will see. The hotel stay does not count, only one of the restaurants would put your points on, the spa no longer does it either-quite disappointing. About the restaurants: The steakhouse, La Bonne Vie, was extremely pricey (all a la carte). It put itself up there, price-wise, with Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Pittsburgh, but did not make it to that level. The service, wait staff, matrie d, were all outstanding. Food was cooked perfectly, but rather bland. The medium priced, Gatsby, was the best choice Food was tasty, large portions and reasonable. It was the only place that served a real breakfast. The Riverfront Buffet - don't waste your $8.99. Food was bland, overcooked and caused digestive issues-at least in both of us. Chalk it up to - "well what do you expect for $8.99?" The Java Joint staff have absolutely no personality & the Starbucks is as it usually is-overpriced. Take coffee and filters and use your little coffee pot in the room, it is much better. About the spa: Great service. Pedicure technician was wonderful as well as the massage therapists. It was a great experience overall and worth the price. The pools: Great. Crystal clear, clean and comfortable. Worth the stay too - even with a bunch of kids in the pool, it was still relaxing (but still puzzled as to who in the world would bring their under age kids to a casino resort). About the hotel: The room was spacious with a mini-fridge. King bed was clean and comfortable. I'd give the housekeeping staff an "F" for the condition of the room. We were even a late check in so there was no rush to clean it. The bathroom floor was dirty, sink was stained and coffee pot was filthy, bedside lampshades were stained and couch was needed a serious cleaning (spotted with things I'd rather not think of). But the crowning glory happened on the last day we were there. A small, albiet gross, cockroach ran out of the couch cushion. I wrote all of this in my comment card and turned it in. I very quietly cautioned the desk clerk to have housekeeping really go over that room and explained why. She was properly grossed out, but never a mention to make it right by giving a little discount, a free meal, a refund for one night (we stayed 4 nights), a free drink-nothing. If the comment card doesn't go into the shredder, we'll see if there is a response-but doubtful. A word about the smoke: It was finally nice to leave self-righteous PA and go to a place where smokers are not treated like lepers. No, it is not a smokey casino-it is very well ventilated. I never even saw a cloud of smoke around a smoker! Non-smokers are trained to whine and complain about any place where they're not breathing their crystal clear air full of the carbon monoxide exhaust emissions and the flurocarbons of room freshner. Bravo casino ventillation system. Overall, we came there for a getaway and that is what we accomplished. We relaxed and didn't sweat the small stuff. We didn't come there to win a million or be treated like royalty, but they need to remember that the little people make up the bulk of their earnings.
