Good, but could be better
By Vanessa, 2/12/12
First off, let me boast about the positives. The location was great! Our family walked to dinner on the riverwalk every night and there's tons of things in the area to keep you occupied. We visited the bakery daily and I recommend their sandwiches and soup. Super yum! Barron's restaurant was okay, but didn't care too much for their main entree's on the buffet, but they had rockin' desserts. Friendly staff and housekeeping and the lobby is a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, as great as this hotel is, there were some huge downfalls that will make me reconsider staying here. The valet is overpriced and you can park in one of the many garages in the area across the street. Valet is $23 a day (?), but we paid $8 across the street. This isn't a deal breaker for me, but be aware that there are better parking options in the area. The room: for as much as we paid for 4 nights, I'd expect something a bit cleaner looking. The carpet looked old and dirty and the beds weren't really that comfortable. The bathrooms were extremely small and the sink area was tiny, as well, making it hard to do makeup, hair, etc. I think they could maintain the old beauty of this hotel easily, but still manage to update some key elements. I was disappointed that it didn't have complimentary wifi, either. If I'm paying a good chunk of money for a classy hotel, I don't want to be nickle and dimed to death. Keep in mind, too that the location is NOISY! Every night we could hear yelling, hollering, sirens and garbage trucks which made it hard for a good night's sleep. I'm not sure if I'd stay here again. Convenient it is, but I might explore other options in the area next time.

Not A 4 Star Hotel!
By RealistsoFly, 8/1/10
I recently took a weekend getaway to San Antonio, TX. I stayed at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel because it was one of the only 4 star hotels that had rooms available so I booked the room for two nights. I loved the valet service and the customer service when I checked in and that's where the love affrair ended. I was told before I booked the room that if I got a room on the "resticted" floor there would be complete privacy no children allowed on those floors. This was not the case not only that the room needed to be cleaned. The carpet was so dirty that my girlfriend didn't want to take her shoes off. It was late when we arrived in San Antonio that there were no rooms left to check into for the night. We decided to stay the night we pulled back the covers and the sheets were stained and the pillows were very dirty. You think for 200 a night plus an additional 20 for breakfast they could replace the sheets and pillows. Yes it's a historic building but needs some updating especially in the bathroom. The toliet was something you would see at a walmart it was old and pealing. I couldn't take the noise or the dirtyness so I decided to check out at 6am the next morning. I complained to the front desk about the cleaniness of the room and they didn't seem to care. I should have booked a by the hour motel instead of the Sheraton Gunter.

By Espo, 5/6/10
Stayed at the Gunter for 1st time. Staff was very accomidating and curtious. Rooms are not all the same size, some are very small. Carpet in hall way to rooms look dingy. Wash rooms are very tiny. Ice machine broke on our floor , was not repaired during our stay.

Not bad at all...
By mark, 2/4/09
My girlfriend and I just returned from this place. The location is great, near the riverwalk, and walking distance from a lot of great attractions (restaurants, bars, tourist attractions) The customer service was outstanding, most of the employees were very friendly and always asking if there was anything they could do, or if we needed directions anywhere. Always gave good recommendations on restaurants, etc. The rooms are nice, nice TV, coffeemaker, iron, ironing board, desks, etc. My only complaint about this place is the mattresses, they were TERRIBLE! Very uncomfortable, and cheap looking. Not what you'd expect from an upscale downtown hotel. The linens they used were also kind of cheap looking and didn't even match anything else in the room. All in all, we enjoyed our stay. The customer service was definitely what made this place stand out.

We would not go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/22/08
We were intialy placed in a standard room with queen size bed. Room was extremely small. Bathroom was extremely small, no room for toilitries; and was dirty -- had black mildew on tiles. Had a terrible ordor coming from the hallway on the 9th floor. Moved us to a second room on 5th floor. Again, room and bathroom were extremely small, although bathroom was clean. Closet was soo...small, you had to push your clothes in to shut the door. They moved us to a 3rd room on the 10th floor, had king size bed, room was bigger as well as bathroom. Pool was a big disappointment, it is not what it appears to be on photo. Extremely small, and dirty (pigeon feathers floating in pool for last 3 days we were there,) and no one bothered to clean, and filter was clogged. Exercise room had limited equipment, and one machine was broken for full 7 days we were there. Charged $22.00 a day for parking while other hotels, located in same area were only charging $18.00 a day. Good location , 2 blocks from Riverwalk, short distance to ALAMO. Hotel restaurant had a good breakfast, did not have dinner. Coffee shop located across street (SIPS) was good for a cheaper breakfast. (breakfast sandwiches/bagels, and sandwiches.) Coffee was good. Staff were helpful and friendly. Hotel is older and needs updating. Not a great deal for the price. Would not stay here again.

Great place to stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/5/08
Myself and a couple of friends spent a weekend at Sheraton Gunter and had a wonderful time. The room was very clean, the service was excellent and the beds were soooo comfortable. :) It is an easy hotel to drive to, is directly across the street from the theater and a short walk to the main area on the Riverwalk. Sheraton Gunter was highly recommended to me by a friend and I will definitely visit here again.

b-e-a-UTIFUL hotel. it has an amazing history to it, right across the street from the beautiful Majestic Theatre. The Sheraton is in the heart of downtown San Antonio. All the employees are the best.

We thought it was nice
By Barefoot Chick, 8/15/07
Well, My family and I enjoyed it, of course some of you may have thought that we were the Beverly Hilbillies tramping through a swanky resort. Granted the staff are working for tips, but they were very polite and helpful to us. The restaurant staff were also very pleasant to us, but we were a little surprised by the automatic gratuity, as well. The parking (valet) price was steep, but it was worth it for the convenience to us. We were enamored by the decor and furnishings. We loved our room and our stay. It has been over three years ago, and our children still talk about it and would love to go back. Maybe someday.........
