WONDERFUL BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/14/11
ALTHOUGH THE VIEWS ARE SPECTACULAR AND THE STAFF IS HELPFUL, THE OCEAN BREEZES DON'T REALLY COOL DOWN A 91DEGREE TEMPERATURE. WE HAD A 3RF FLOOR, WALK UP ROOM, TO GET THE BEST VIEWS AND OCEAN BREEZES AND IT WAS JUST PLAIN TOO HOT FOR COMFORT. REMEMBER...NOTHING ON THIS ISLAND HAS A/C...NO RESTAURANTS, NO SHOPS, NOTHING BUT BEN& JERRY'S. ISLAND HAS GREAT BEACHES AND WATER ACTIVITIES. GO PREPARED WITH ALL BEACH GEAR AND IT WILL BE A GREAT VACATION SPOT.

what's all the hooplah about?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/28/09
I spent a Saturday night at Springhouse in a "suite" and was very disappointed in the room. The pull out couch was what I would expect in a Holiday Inn, certainly out of character for a $300 a night room. It was so uncomfortable I hardly slept all night. The view was spectacular and the staff was great, but both the size of the room and the terrible couch made this a once in a lifetime adventure. Next time I'll save $200, stay at the Lighthouse Inn in Galilee, and spend my money on a great meal and some shopping.

Glad I chose the Spring House
By Amanda B, 7/12/09
After extensive research on all Block Island hotels I was apprehensive to Book with any of them. However after visiting Block island before (just for the day) and loving the island it was a risk I was willing to take. Reviews were really all over the place for each hotel. I chose the spring house and am very pleased with my choice. The hotel is the oldest one on the island but has had many modern updates. Room was nicely decorated and clean. There is no TV or AC but this was not a problem. All the rooms come with ceiling fans. The location is great its just a few minutes walk to town but is far enough away to enjoy a nice peaceful stay. The view is absolutely gorgeous better than any other hotel could offer. Staff members were helpful and I was able to get a reduced rate for a mid week visit. Normally $250 a night I was able to book for $205. Overall very nice stay and would absolutely stay with them again. The cons had some issues getting the room door to lock and the floor was squeaky. Other than that no complaints. We had an non ocean view room with a not so great view but spent very little time in room anyway with so much to do on the island. Room had beautiful deep windows and high ceilings. I was very pleased with my stay and wanted to write this to help others in making their selection since I found there to be no real consistency with any of the reviews I read. Book with the Spring house I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Great Expectations Fell Short
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/23/08
Stayed 9/18-9/21 in a $250/N ocean view suite. Was shocked at the state of disrepair the room was in, and the level of cleanliness was subpar. Upon arrival, unidentifiable brown smears on walls (yikes!) had to be addressed by house keeping. (Staff was responsive in a timely manner) There was a thick coating of dust on light fixtures/walls and behind the bed. The ocean view we were so excited about was obscured by a heavily rusted fire escape. The shanty-looking blinds took some patient re-arranging to get closed properly for privacy in the evening. On the 2nd day, maintenance had to replace the shower curtain that kept falling down. (We did not complain- this was addressed of their own volition) In fairness, I had stayed here in the past and had been pleased. Not sure what happened since then, but this was my 8th trip to BI, and I would never stay at the Springhouse again. It's a shame because the views from the property are unrivaled, and the location is convenient, yet away from the heavily trafficed areas. Did not eat at the restaurant because I felt uncomfortable about dinning there after seeing the condition of the room. Would have relocated, but due to several weddings on the island, accommodations were tough to come by on such short notice. I hate to say it, but based on this experience, I would cross the Springhouse off your potential accommodations list. The good news is there are many other great places to choose from, just remember to book ahead.

Beautiful hotel look, motel quality service
By Jay, 8/17/08
This historic, formerly lovely hotel rides on it's former prestige, though it is clearly neglected. It's in disrepair from all angles. Our 400 per night suite had broken and exposed electrical that was obviously left that way for several years, broken fixtures, loose plumbing, no hot water one night, and unknown to us, a Thursday night party (READ: Opportunity to sell drinks) with a loud band doing 80s covers until 1am. Even the toaster was broken during breakfast and we had to hold down the handle to get it to work. The staff are pleasant enough but seem to be all imported for the summer from abroad and aren't able to assist you. Someone apparently bought this place in 1992 and seems to be milking it for all it's worth. Keep away from this place. I give it two stars for having the best view on the island. Too bad there is a drunken yahoo in front singing Freefallin' at midnight. For business travelers, note there is no wifi for computers. For those with kids, no in room entertainment. No central air, though the ocean breeze is decent if you can find a window fan in the hotel.

Great Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/30/08
What a place to stay. The rooms have that old quiet feeling. No T.V. or phone in our room which meant a nice peaceful undisturbed stay. A little pricey but well worth it. Service was outstanding. Would definitely return.

Great place, but read on...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/20/06
The Spring House really is the best hotel (& restaurant) on the Block Island. I have been going to the island for a long time now. Some of the other reviews complain about no a/c or tv... as far as the a/c is concerned, the hotel is on top of a hill & gets a great breeze so if you just open your windows you should be fine. And about the tv thing-- if you miss the tube that much GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Block Island is about getting away from everything and having a good time. The nightlife is great so if you are staying in your room after dark wishing you could watch tv then stay home. If you are an uptight complainer who has to have every detail your way exactly then Block Island's laid back attitude is NOT FOR YOU. If however you want to relax & have a good time (& drink a lot) then this is the perfect place, and the Spring House is the best on the island.

what a miserable, rude, dump!
By k, 8/8/06
The Spring House hotel is a perfect example of how NOT to operate a hotel. The employees were extremely rude and did not have any idea what customer service was. I even had the displeasure of meeting the slobby owner who was even more obnoxious and oblivious to the needs of his hotel and guests. The room was $450 and did not have any air conditioning and wasn't clean. The management clearly just wants to take your money and not be bothered by you. One night at the Spring House ruined our whole visit to Block Island. Stay away from this rude tourist trap.

Great Place to stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/6/06
My family and I spent July 4th weekend with two other couples. We were told that there was no TV and no A/C ahead of time. So we brought a DVD for the kids and happened on a great weather weekend. All staff was superb, rooms neat and clean. Views were great and lawn proved great for all the kids in our group. A quick walk to town and the beach made a car not even a thought. For all those who complain about "the hill" and "no TV", old hotel, maybe New England is not the place for you. We are going back.
