Not perfect but a pretty good value
After checking out a number of places in Carlisle, we chose Hotel Carlisle for our small family reunion (20+ people). We were a little nervous about some of the bad reviews, but an advanced visit to the place assured us that it wasn't the hell-hole some people described. And the group rate made this one of the best values in the area, almost half of what some of the bigger chains charge. It's a nice-looking facility, and the rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable. At the manager's suggestion we booked a suite for our mother (her 90th birthday), and her "living room" was a wonderful gathering place for the group. Management was very friendly and responsive when we asked for extra chairs, tp, etc. We didn't eat at the Embers, so I can't comment on the food. But our experience was generally good and it worked well for our group.
Having said that, it's true that the place does need a facelift. In our room the ceiling showed signs of past leaking, the carpet was stained, and the tile in the shower looked bad. In other rooms the shower didn't work well, problems connecting with wi-fi, etc. The ice machine in our area didn't work and you had to wander quite a distance in the building to find one that did. None of this was a major problem for us, but it should be noted. If I'd have been paying top dollar, I guess I might have been annoyed. But overall we were happy with our choice.
