Beautiful hotel, questionable service
By ,
I stayed at the hotel for a wedding taking place there. As its name suggests, it feels quite palacial - beautiful and clean rooms, lobbies and ballrooms that are worth being photographed. We loved the location, being able to look out our window at St. Patrick's and seeing the lights of Rock Center. But when the family of the bride has difficulty getting a replacement key for their grandmother (they needed a manager's approval?) and the hotel gives you trouble over a minibar that had never been stocked to begin with, you start to wonder what your'e paying for. I was burned because I cancelled a babysitter service through them too close to my reservation time. Had they said I would have still had to pay $100, I would have just kept the appointment! This is New York, though. One expects to spend a lot of money and a lot of times that money is spent on the experience. In the case of the Palace, that experience is pretty special. I would suggest dining elsewhere as their food does not nearly justify the outlandish prices unless you actually visit their 2 Michelin Star restaurant, Gilt.

Refused to Refund-- Customer Service Error
By ,
I booked two rooms to stay at the New York Palace Hotel for a trip to NYC for my mother’s birthday on October 17-18, 2009. I made the reservation online at the hotel’s website and clicked that I wanted to book 2 rooms— one under my husband’s name and one under my father’s name. My husband and I had previously stayed at the New York Palace in 2006 and we enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately, our plans changed and it was necessary to cancel both rooms. I was aware that cancellation was free of charge if done by October 16, 2009 at 12:15 pm. On October 13, 2009, I logged onto the New York Palace website and realized that there was no way to effect a cancellation online. I called the telephone number on the website, 212-888-7000, and informed the customer service agent that I would like to cancel my reservation for two rooms. I was told that the rooms were cancelled. On October 27, 2009, I viewed my credit bill online and noted that I had been charged $496.92 by the New York Palace. I called the New York Palace billing department to dispute this charge, as I had previously cancelled my reservation. I was informed that they had a record that I had cancelled the room reserved in my husband’s name but that the room reserved in my father’s name had not been cancelled, and thus was charged as a “no show.” Obviously, this was an error on the part of the customer service clerk. The person who I spoke to asked that I send an email in writing and she said that she would look into it for me. I was informed that they had no record that I had cancelled the room in the name of my father and they could not credit me for the no-show charge. I disputed the charge with my credit card company and was again informed that the hotel had no indication of cancellation of my father’s room in their system. I am furious— obviously it was my intention to cancel both hotel rooms and I should not have been charged for the no-show. Any error in properly cancelling both reservations is the fault of the Hotel’s customer service clerk, not mine. However, because the hotel had no record of the cancellation, they would not refund the money, leaving my credit card company with no recourse. It is unbelievable that the New York Palace Customer Service refuses to take responsibility for their error and refund my no-show that I legitimately called to cancel prior to the deadline. This is unacceptable. I can only imagine how many people are being screwed by the New York Palace Customer Service/Billing department. Can you imagine— they charge you for drinks from the mini-bar, but you are stuck with the charge because you have no proof that you didn’t drink the mini vodkas!

The Palace really is!
By ,
Spent 4 nights at the Palace last week and loved it. Our room was in the Towers on the 42nd floor overlooking St. Patrick's Catherdral and Rockefeller Center. Huge suite and excellent service! I recommend it highly but not cheap. Also a great location easy walking to Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and Broadway.

Can't wait to get back there !
By ,
Love it, love it, love it. Beautiful hotel in a terrific location. Everyone is very helpful and polite. If you can afford it, be sure to book a room in the Towers. The view from the window is something special. The accomodations are luxurious and well maintained. Even loved the chocolates on the pillow every night! I would NOT advise eating at the resturant downstairs. The quality and taste of the food does not justify the price. But I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to pamper yourself and enjoy everything that New York has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

Nice Hotel But Be Careful
By ,
We just returned from our stay at the New York Palace. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, especially around the holidays. A great location to all the sites. We were within two blocks of Radio City and the NBC Building. The rooms were very clean, tastefully decorated and quiet. We had a beautiful view of the city. We felt it was fairly family friendly however, be very careful of the mini bar in the room. Everything is on a sensor INCLUDING THE ICE BUCKET! If you remove anything, even if it is just to look at it, you will be billed for it! When we got home and checked our bank account, we found that we were billed $10.84. I immediately called the hotel and found that the small bag of peanuts my son picked up and then put back down was charged to our bank account. After I explained what had happened, they did remove the charge. Also, if you use their parking garage, make sure you keep your receipt. After we checked out, my husband misplaced our receipt. They eventually did find our car, but the bellman was unwilling to help my husband load our baggage into our car and just stood by and watched us. The hotel does have it's good points, but also has some not so good points. While it is a very beautiful place, it was a bit too "stuffy" for our taste. If you do not like that type of atmosphere, I think you might feel a bit out of place as we did. We had a great time, but I think we might find another hotel less opulent next time.

Excellent--Again and Again
By ,
The hotel is extremely well located in mid-town near Rockefeller Center. Literally within a couple of blocks of shopping on 5th Avenue, restaurants within a few minutes on the upper east side, west side and a 15 minute ride downtown. The rooms are large by NY standards. They have been upgraded and most contain LCD televisions, a modern "control" system, and large elegant bathrooms. They are internet friendly and provide ample workspace. The food is very good--if you go to the executive or tower levels, you can use the executive dining room for buffet breakfast, small sandwiches for lunch and appetizers and drinks for dinner. There is a very nice and well-equipped gym, one of the best in NY, and they will supply you with workout clothing and shoes. Overall, its a great experience, especially for business travel. The prices of food are a bit steep, but the rooms are not unreasonable. Remember, this is a FOUR STAR HOTEL. To stay in a five star, such as St. Regis, or Four Seasons, will cost you 50% to 75% more. The fact is that prices have risen significantly in NY in the past couple of years, mainly due to the rise of the Euro and a resulting influx of European tourists. I have been to this hotel on literally scores of trips to NY, and will continue to go since it is always solid.

Disappointing
By ,
This was our second stay at the hotel. The first time was 3 years ago in December which was great. Our stay in August 2006 was rather disappointing. I requested the same type of room we had before facing the 42nd street and we got one facing a small alley. The room bell went off at 5:00 am twice. a wake up call at 6:00am, and the room was much smaller than the previous one. We had to wait a long time for the elevators and the cusotmer services was not that great except for the consiage. The keys did not work at all, we had to reactivate them all the time. Will consider twice before coming back.
